What's your favorite method of defending your fort?

Spartan's way - Badass dwarven army
Trapper's way - Stone traps, weapon traps, and cages
Mechanic's way - Pressure plates, supports, and levers
Mason's way - A single row of walls blocking off your gates
Sniper's way - Hunters, marksdwarves, ballistae, and ranged weaponry
Beastmaster's way - War dogs, zerg swarm catsplosions, and giant badger army
Armok's way - Magma, and nothing else but a floodgate and lever to release it

Preferred method of warfare?

As stated above.

When goblin Christmas comes, what is your preferred way of greeting the gift bringers?

I prefer dealing with it with Rangers, they're sneaky and awesome, with a mix of mechanics. Rangers are fragile, need to use good machines to help them out.

Long tunnels and loaded ballistae.  Makes for good skewers.

I use traps, along with magma as the front of my defense. Just in case though, I always have a squad or two just in case the shit hits the fan.

I'm your standard spartan. Instead of doing megaprojects like everyone else, I enjoy getting 50-100 legendary soldiers and watch them destroy the gob's.

Call yourself a spartan?! Goblins are nothing! Go against Dig Deeper orcs or LoFR voidwalkers!

Against the orcs of Dig Deeper 30 spartan warriors and a big spiked pit.

Against the mod LoFR, I use 15 spartans, 20 marksmen. I also deploy zinger bombs (hatches a few z levels above drop living grenades on enemies, killing them from the height and causing them to blow up themselves and enemy), and pastured sabre tooth tigers on a retractable drawbridge right above distracted enemies. One minute goblin bowmen shooting at dwarves, next minute OMFG ITS GOT MY THROAT!

I always try a trappy hallway leading up to my fort, but my early defense is always a bunch of cheese makers, miners, and beekeepers that grab whatever metal weapons I have and several training ones to kill random wildlife for food and EX, only to get killed when REAL foes show up.

I enjoy reading about Spartans more then anything else. But when I play I seldom engage the enemy hand to hand. Mostly because in Corrosion the weakest siege can easily dispatch a group of legendary humans. In Vanilla, I'm more likely to engage in melee, but if I had to choose, I'd sooner have archers.

I go with melees in the courtyard. All the time. Even though I play with LofR, and I'm currently looking around for other antagonist style races to scavenge from other mods so that things get even more deadly here.

This is simply because I've found ranged units to be unreliable, and far too resource intensive. That's not even paying attention to the level of micromanagement involved in using them well.
I don't even use siege equipment anymore.

I dislike traps because they're cheap, though I do occasionally set up a bunch. Normally when I do, it's in places where you'd logically have traps (rather than just wildly trapping a corridor) so that when I come back as an adventurer it feels  a little more organic.

I'm working on an "All of the Above" option.  Traps and mechanisms I know how to use, and I tend to train at least a full squad of melee and ranged dwarves.  Only the beastmaster and Armok's Blood options elude me.  Beastmaster because I never seem to get good beasties, and the Magma is always so far away.  And draining it can be bothersome as well...

Mix of war beasts and traps. Speaking of which, I found, captured, and tamed my first dragon. She overlooks the walkway into my fortress from behind a raising drawbridge to protect her when the marksgobbs are out.

Quit using my old style (marksmen and commando dwarves) due to resources and micromanagement. I find pulling a lever to be more entertaining.

Traps, masonry and mechanics is my solution. The only disadvantages of the lack of military are the lack of versatility (the traps can be at only one place at a time) and the lack of easy execution method (conversely, this manifests itself as hilarious goblinite extractor devices). I also prefer having a way to totally seal my Fortress (except possibly an amusement park for visitors) if I need to.

Like... a retractable bridge with traps underneath?

WHY oh why didn't I think of this!
