I put about 15 hours in this weekend.

I can't say I've seen a lot of the new stuff, because importing my save file seems to have jacked up my wins-per-character.

Pre-Afterbirth, I knew I had beaten both ??? and The Lamb with most of the characters. I import my save file and many of those wins are not recorded (even though the achievements and unlocks for the items were clearly still unlocked.)

So I spent most of my time replaying to get the first 5 wins with most of my characters, again. In order to see the new end levels, I think you MUST beat Mega Satan, which is easier said than done as you're not guaranteed two angel rooms per run. So I basically took 15 or 20 hours to rewin all the old game content while not seeing much of the new. That said...

Closets are now a thing and they fucking suck. If you think fighting your least favorite enemy in a room about 1/3rd the size of a normal BoI room is bad, imagine what fighting DOUBLE TROUBLE for your least favorite boss is like under the same circumstances.

There are rooms now which are literal traps. You walk in, door shuts, turrets start firing and you have to hit one or more switches in the room for the turret/spikes to turn off and the doors to open. It's basically "Hey, I heard you like health. Let me tax you some of it then." While many of the rooms aren't bad, some are basically unpassable without using some health somewhere unless you've got flight.

Occasionally the item in the treasure room on the first floor is surrounded by rocks and a tile of spikes. Because you know what's fun? Missing the first fucking treasure room because you can't take the damage or have any bombs. THANKS ED YOU FUCK.

The Scarred Womb is probably my favorite new alt-level. If you thought Womb was gross and/or evocative......Scarred Womb is that x4. From the music to the visuals, it leaves an impression on you.

Really enjoying the music for the expansion.

Many of the new pills are worthless. They're just weird effects like Retrovision which have next to no impact on gameplay. Normally I wouldn't care but all the new pills just further dilute the pool of good pills with shit ones. Even with Cain + Extra Luck + PhD, the bulk of pills I run across aren't worth it. That combo typically made a run in previous versions.

Some of the new bosses are a little over the top. Rag Man, Little Horn are easy (Little Horn spawns every fucking game right now because he's Ed's new favorite but at least he's easy.) But there's one that basically throws out Mom's Heart levels of bullet spam and you can get him the first level. I believe he's called the Stain, modeled after that one Womb mob that sinks into the ground then reappears. It's kinda bullshit to throw that at the players before they've even gotten anything.

Not a lot has noticeably changed in my runs. I do like the new room formations and stuff, but the trap rooms kind of lack variety; I feel like I've already seen all of them and I haven't even played that long yet.

Like nenjin, I am also a bit miffed that some of the pills are completely pointless, because I use Cain a lot for his increased luck.

Rag Man is annoying as hell if you can't kill him quickly because he keeps spawning his frigging spiders, but I like Little Horn a lot. He's not particularly challenging, but his variety of moves makes him a really dynamic fight. I was really surprised when he shot his hole-in-the-ground attack at me and teleported me while dealing damage.

New enemies are pretty good, and a number of them can be rather intimidating. My least favorite thing to fight is the red ghost guys that disappear, reappear, and shoot Brimstone lasers at you. When they approach you from multiple angles it gets really difficult to avoid them.

Anyone know what the glowing black creep does? Because I've walked on it and stuff and nothing has really happened.

Oh, and if you haven't experienced it yet, teleporting bosses in large rooms are the most annoying thing ever.

Me: WHERE ARE YOU, LOKI?! AHA! THERE YOU ARE! NOW I'LL -
Loki: *teleports*
Me: DAMN IT, GET BACK HERE YOU BASTARD!

I'll take annoying over dangerous. Try doing a double trouble Mega Fatty in an XL room. You can't see it when he launches himself into the air which means you'll be fighting the other boss only to have his fat ass dive bomb you with no warning. In the normal rooms it's fine. You see him go up, you move, he lands. But in the XL rooms where you can't see him launch and you're preoccupied fighting the other boss, that becomes a real problem. Same story for The Cage.

Oh, yes, I've had that one.

And yes, it was god-awful.

Please tell me there are no new achievements or unlocks using the Lost. It was enough of a pain in the ass getting Real Platinum God (or is it "!Platinum God!"? I can't keep them straight, or maybe the name changed) last time, I don't want to go through all that again on an even harder difficulty.

I think he made changes to the Lost but TBH I have no idea what they are.

Lost has spectral tears by default and starts with the D4 I think.

He made some changes to The Lost to make it much more palatable.

Anyways, afterbirth seems to be largely a ++ of content. I'm getting that "WTF does that knife do? OMG that's so cool" effect all over again, which is what I love.

Item interactions seem way better too. I got mom's knife which completely overwrites how your tears work and was like aawwww. But then later I noticed it still applies the burning shot effect I'd had from before. That's sort of a weak example but, over the years and thousands of combos I've lost track of what does and doesn't work together.

Visually not much changed on that front though. You pretty quickly overwrite any visuals your character picks up with the newest one. They also don't appear to have ever added teh post-game Isaac export tool they talked about.

I hate the addition of Rag Man. I'm at a -14 streak because I keep getting him and terrible treasures (ooh, box of spiders ::) ) on the first floor and I'll willingly admit I'm just not good enough to beat him without a crutch like The Chariot. >.<

On the other hand, Holy Tears rock.

I don't find Rag Man tough. He's just time consuming if you don't have great damage.

Double trouble Rag Man fight though took forever. FWIW, his head still counts as boss damage until it spawns the Psychic Spider things.

Recently got Mom's Knife + Loki's Horns + Technology, which resulted in FOUR knives around Isaac, one for each cardinal direction, and still enabled me to shoot lasers while charging knife shots that occasionally shot in all four directions at once.

Okay, Afterbirth, I'm starting to like you a bit more now.

Dr. Fetus + Monstro's Lung + Hook Worm = one easy run, that's for sure.

@nenjin: That's mainly my problem. With the exception of my last run (the one I just mentioned; as Eden I got Dr. Fetus on the first treasure room) I just don't get good equipment before Rag Man. I nuked his ass this time though. I think my thing with BoI is that I'm only as good as my drops. :-\ Some people are terrible even with good ones, some people are great no matter what they get, I'm in the 'getting this particular item will make or break a run' camp.

Sometimes it's not ever a matter of being good with crappy items, though. If you start a run where bosses drop nothing but HP up, there's not enough money dropped to afford 15 cent shop items, and every treasure room gives you an active-use item, you're pretty much screwed. I mean, yeah, victory is possible, but it's not gonna be fun trying to get there.

RNGesus is definitely a huge factor, as in any game with randomized stuff.
