I'm not sure about it being zelda-like but it does draw a bit of its interface and the room-by-room mechanic from classic Zeldas.

Personally I'll be happy if it is similar to smash TV, that was an awesome game I really should bother to play again beat someday.

So this comes out today. Steam stopped saying it unlocked in x time about 30 mins ago...yet it's got no purchase button yet, or listed price.

So it's really more of an arcade game with rogue-like features than an straight RPG. Rogue-like meets Smash-TV meets Zelda, there abouts.

Game is really random. Like, get great powerup or get crap in a treasure room or from a boss. Items are half power up, half attack/movement/other stuff changers, and most change your appearance. (Mom's Panties is an item :X) Bosses are semi-random. It's one-life deal, from what I can tell, no save. So it's more like an arcade-game in that respect. It dynamically tracks your progress as you've played it, gradually adding content in to help you along and for you to unlock items on further playthroughs. (So you'll beat a miniboss and the item they unlock can be found when you play again.) There's 4 characters, Isaac, Magdelaine, Cain and Judas, which are unlocked as you play through (Mag's condition is 7 heart containers "in one run")

This seems pretty fun as a time killer instead of even a softcore RPG. It's Team Meat style controls, which is to say, you can't change shit from default.

The music is pretty good though. The art style is growing on me. There's a lot of little detail to the enemies. For less than the cost of a value meal, I've spent my money on worse things.

PS- People that didn't appreciate Super Meat Boy's brand of humor....stay away. Far, far away.

This is pretty addictive. The randomness, the appearance changes, the volume of items and power ups. And the styling and audio help a lot. I mean, how can you not like this? :P

When the items are all unlocked I suppose it will lose some thrill, but this is pretty good. Hope they plan on some DLC or expansions or something. I'd buy.

I also finally found the screen size and options and stuff. Don't know why it's buried inside the game itself instead of at the start menu ect...

There's actually a decent amount of games that "were" like that, it's a more common older design.

This is the author's blog where he explains the features of the game in-depth. It's actually far more dynamic than it appears at first.

So after about 6 or 7 deaths it occurred to me, I should save my appearance to show off. Had some really cool ones that I lost, and haven't seen the items that made them in the 6+ or so hours I've been playing.

Nor have I actually beaten it yet! Just when you think you're getting close, you find more levels getting added on to the "last" level. I'm up to 20 deaths or so I think, and I'm starting to wonder how many levels there are if you ace it your first time through. The game isn't SUPER hard, and I was never that good at smash TV, but the randomness does a lot to mix things up and your ability to get through later levels is pretty much equally dependent on speed, good firepower and enough hearts to soak some incidental damage. Lots of little neat things hidden around, like the embodiments of the 7 deadly sins that function like mini-bosses, some puzzle rooms. For a light weight offering, I'm pretty impressed. With co-op, this game would be amazing fun, and fertile grounds for lots of gameplay mechanics. I hope they're successful with this one and choose to invest more time in it.

Co-op would be fun. Anyway I got a question: How do you access secret rooms aside from the tarot card that transports you to it? On top of that, is there a way to tell where a secret room might be? And if you do find it, do you just bomb the wall or what?

There are several items that reveal where the secret room is on the map, and some of the even open the doors to them.

If you lack all that, you just have to guess, there doesn't seem to be any visual indicator or test you can run. Generally though secret rooms like to connect to multiple rooms, so sometimes you can look at the fully explored map and guess where they might be. But it's expensive bomb wise. Like a lot of stuff in this game, equipment relating to secret doors is best found early on.

Oh, thanks! Anyway, I haven't found this less fun since I started playing. I never played Smash TV, and am pretty poor at the game, because I legitimately start having trouble at about Chapter 2.

The game keeps crashing to desktop for me, and with nothing to indicate what went wrong, either. It's really killing the fun for me, since it doesn't ever save.

EDIT: And it seems to have made it forget I unlocked one of the characters.  >:(
