Speaking of Lazarus, I just rocked the Chest with him. I won't bore you with exactly how OP he was by the end, but suffice it to say that I earned the "take no damage in the Chest or Dark Room" achievement quite easily.

Depends on a few factors. If your twitch skills aren't good, you'll want that HP for later game bosses who favor teh bullet spam, and for the increased damage you take in the Womb+. Damage reduction, missile shields, a good health regen setup, all of those things can allow you to sacrifice a lot of HP to the Devil Rooms for items. However if you have no good damage mitigation, no missile shield, no health regen strategy and crappy twitch skills....Devil Rooms can be a liability.

It's actually awesome. Angel and Devil rooms are such a huge deal for beating the hardest things in the game that forcing yourself to take as little damage as possible makes you do so much better in the game in the long run. Also, taking red heart damage makes the chance for the reward rooms way way lower, so getting rid of all the red hearts is a great thing to do.

That playstyle also makes playing as Blue Baby and Lost a way more comfortable experience.

I've discovered that the orbiting tears item (Tiny Planet?) can make even Mom's Knife pretty terrible. Your fire rate remains slow (because you still have to charge the knife), the exact path of the knife is almost impossible to predict, and the knife can fly through the air so quickly that it might not register hits on enemies. I've seen the wildly spiraling knife pass straight through several foes.

Tiny Planet is indeed a run-killer unless you have the tractor-beam power-up to negate it.

I'm not sure I'd necessarily call it a run-killer, but in this case it certainly is. I had to beat Gurdy by just standing next to it and letting the knife's contact damage do the job :/

I'm sure if you're actually good at the game it isn't, but I tend to get it a lot in Curse of the Blind floors and I always inevitably die the next floor because I can't control my attacks. >.<

Mom's knife/tiny planet is definitely a synergy everybody has to get at least once in their BoI career to understand true horror.

The best thing about Tiny Planet is that the tears go over obstacles, allowing you to use rocks or whatever as cover. It can also get some pretty good synergies (Brimstone and Technology come to mind).

I'm sure TP+Brimstone is fine, but I've never gotten that combo. Even if I did I can still see myself getting killed for being unable to control the beam the way I want.

According to the wiki, the beam spirals around you before shooting straight ahead. So it doesn't seem like it'd be that much different from normal, though I've never gotten the combo myself.

Unrelated, I just fought (and defeated) the Hush for the first time, as BrimstoneMaggie. Having three orbital flies really saved me from a lot of damage; it wasn't until around when those chasing beams showed up that I got hit. Ended the battle with half a soul heart and a single red heart, but I won!
