The blue flames can be destroyed with bombs. They seem to have a pretty good chance of dropping soul hearts.

FMK. (First Mom Kill!) Took a few deaths because some of the tear changing items take a lot of getting used to.

All in all, I'm satisfied. I do think the game, while it took a lot of steps up in visual quality, lost the crispness that helped so many of the monsters and such become iconic. It's a small complaint, but there are some enemies that just look downright bad. Flies in particular are almost blobs. Other enemies though, look nice and clean.

The game feels faster too. It's not just the actual FPS. Menus are quick, notifications are quick, room changes are quick.

Music is great, it's dialed down in game to where it's not distracting, and it really works with how much darker the visuals are now.

Not seeing the character export feature, which I'm kinda disappointed about. I wanted to make a big mega page of all my Isaacs. Wonder if he'll get around to that or decide not to do it.

And the new Mom's Heart fight...

The new Mom's Boss fight is something straight out of the touhous, but not nearly as bullet-hellish as

The game definitely feels faster and there are certain enemies you really gotta watch out for. (The skeletons and their thrown bones get me constantly.)

That said, I feel like the game is actually easier than BoI. Maybe that's because I played so much with "Everything is harder now" that downgrading is giving me a false sense of ease. But, for example, the Knights? In BoI with EIHN, would turn around at the drop of a hat to face your direction when you came up behind them. In Rebirth, they don't turn around for shit, and just let you shoot them in the back of the head.

Also I found a double locked room (takes two keys to enter) with the big die on the floor....no idea what happened, but something happened, and I instantly got like 5 items added to my stuff. A familiar, a couple tear upgrades, the big horns.....not sure what happened there, because I think it actually removed several of my upgrades when it did that, but did not take them off my sheet.

I'm a little disappointed how easily the visuals get overwritten on Isaac. I was hoping in Rebirth that the visual effects would stack better, but they don't seem to. If you have like Mom's Wig and then get Leo, one will overwrite the other. Actual item abilities getting overwritten seems a little better, but it still happens. (Got Anti-Gravity Tears overwritten by the Cursed Tears.)

A couple things I've found too:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only gotten a few Mom's Heart kills (and one Isaac kill) so far. Missile defense is way more important than it used to be in the original, because more bosses do bullet-hell style stuff now. And while Mom's foot stomp is smaller, it's actually way faster than in the previous game. Trying to fight Mom with Curse of Darkness is a big pain in the ass.

Success on first run. It was touch and go for a while too because of sacrificing hearts to the devil.

Edit: Have to agree with nenjin about the skeletons, dem bones, and the knights.

I thought I would hate all the new "turrets" and living hazards....but it's still those stone face turrets that spit explosives that fuck me every time. The bouncing skulls and gravity spike rooms, irritating but not so bad.

The Mom's hands aren't bad but it's highly dependent on what else is in the room. If you've got room to run you basically just continuously back up.

The Husk seems really tough now, he's fast and is constantly attacking. Dingle isn't tough but he can catch you napping with that rush attack. The Fallen likewise seems faster on the draw than he used to be. He doesn't chase you nearly as long now it feels, and doesn't sit there with that stupid expression on his face for very long before he Brimstones. In general it feels like animations and idle time on a lot of enemies has been reduced. It hasn't necessarily made the game harder, but for people with 100+ hours in the original, you can feel some differences.

Dingle is rough until you learn his tells.  He telegraphs each attack massively.

So...

apparently eden can start with no health. Like at all. There is no health bar.

At least my first item was the shield that can take 1 hit every room.

Will post how this run goes.

EDIT: Picked up a soul heart, still doesn't show a health bar.
EDIT2: Hmph. Must have been a curse.

How procedural is this game truly? Just the levels?

Pretty much. There's some procedural handling of how attacks work and stack, but it's probably stretching to label it like that.

So I think the game is, even with "Everything is harder now", much easier than the original. I'm currently on a 5 win streak, which I'd never come close to getting in vanilla Binding of Isaac. Money feels a lot more common (so you can feed the merchant), Eternal Hearts drop more often under random circumstances and game doesn't feel like it's as stingy with the room drops. Only a couple games out of about 40 now or something, have I had no keys or bombs to get goodies in each level.

Besides, when you're decked out like this it's hard not own everything you run across: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=339595004

I've been winning so regularly I'm just going down the character list and beating stuff until I run out of achievements. And I think that will still be a good long while. I guess this is partly the reason for Hard Mode, because 1 or 2 especially broken item combinations can take the teeth out of the normal game.

As an aside, I entered long horizatonal room in the Womb, and ran into a Larry Jr. so long, he literally stretched the room from end to end. Not exactly tough when you're surrounded by a lazer field at 6 damage, but, under different circumstances it would have been brutal.

Also just found....
