Super Meat Boy co-designer Edmund McMillen's next game is influenced by the original Legend of Zelda and arcade classics Smash TV, and Robotron: 2084. Oh, and the Bible. The unlikely mash-up is called The Binding of Isaac, and it's launching on Steam in August.

I own SMB and I think I've played about 4 minutes of it. Platformers like that just aren't my cup of tea. But I've watched people play lots of SMB and I loved it in that regard, from the art style to the different characters.

A hanging corpse in place of the Old Man only says good things to me about what this game will be like. 8 dungeons, 10+ bosses, 42 enemy types and 4 sets of upgradable equipment sounds like plenty of meat on the bones of an indie game.

Its tempting, but team meat tends to enjoy potty humor a little more than I do.  For meat boy it was okay because it wasn't really about the story, but I'm not sure I want to play through an RPG of the same style.

This isn't purely a Team Meat endeavor though, there's a 3rd party involved, so maybe they share your sentiment.

McMillen, who with designer Tommy Refenes created Super Meat Boy and the Team Meat studio, is working on Isaac as a side project with fellow indie dev Florian Himsl.

A quick search of them turns up a lot of flash games, so I can't really comment on what they're about.

This will be a day one buy for me if I have the cash for it. Looks like a lot of fun. Especially considering that according to Edmund's Blog the game is going to have randomly generated aspects. Hopefully this means the dungeons and maybe the world will be randomly generated every time. Though it might just come down to 'oh hey, one of three items can be in this chest. Which one will it beeeee?'.

So uh...here's the story trailer.

Methinks someone had some issues with parental authority growing up. I can already hear some Christian group getting angry over the content of the game.

First off, it is a shame this game is all the way back on the ninth or tenth page. Come on people, isn't this the kind of game Bay12 enjoys? Who actually cares if the story is enough to create a media firestorm (Which will undoubtedly function as free advertising).

I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon Edmund's blog, but I think it started after I noticed the Binding of Isaac in the steam coming soon list. Apparently it's been dated as coming out (exclusively) on steam on September 28 for $5.

http://edmundmcmillen.blogspot.com/2011/09/binding-of-isaac-release-date.html

I'm only curious how they will support this game after it goes live. At that price I'm almost anticipating one or two bug fixes then the guys dropping it.

Nice. I like games that are coming soon and cost less than a Value meal.

Triachnid was the best game anyone has ever made ever.

I would also like to see a sequel, but I fear it can never live up to the past.

Yeeaah..

That was kind of tasteless.

Seems like they could've just started with the whole "Isaac found a trapdoor that lead to whoknowswhere" and left it at that, but alright then.

That would defeat the entire purpose.

It was executed slightly poorly, but the entire intro is a take on the Abraham/Isaac story in the Bible. More or less. Hell, why do you think the game is called that?

gameplay looks kinda dull though...mostly robotron/smash TV with a bit of story thrown in. I dont see how this is a Zelda like really, all the rooms are just rectangles with more stuff to shoot.

Sorry guys, doesnt look that great to me. I hope I am wrong, but first impressions and all..

The artstyle doesn't appeal to me at all.  If I'm going to be staring at an RPG for hours on end I don't want to feel vaguely disgusted the entire time.
