Created three random cells, made two of each and left it. Two of the species both grew into large groups, pink ones that linked and black ones that grouped around the pink ones. The other one seemed to be low in numbers, but another cell has come along that seems to join up to the large groups and cells and link with them. Fun.

EDIT: The black cells turned out to be the dominant species, the screen was full of them closing on the now small in number pink cells. All the other species were dead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitness_landscape

That thing. It's a plane. That is bad.

Sorry if I don't understand, but I don't think it is a plane. From what I understand that would mean that all cells are equally fit which isn't at all the case.

Edit: I think I do see what you mean about the reproduction rates being too similar. I will consider some mechanism or tweaks that will make the reproduction rates more dependent on fitness. Thanks for pointing this out :)
No. Selection pressures are probably about right given that you ocationaly do get actual evolution going. I said it was a PLANE, not that it was flat. It's sloping, but it lacks any complexity because they're just accumulating predefined "good traits"... Ugh, sorry I suck at explaing things that'swh I tried linking wikipedia instead.

No problem, I appreciate the feedback. I see what you mean now - currently a more complex cell is probably more fit. The majority of genes are beneficial when turned on. I do have more negative and neutral traits on the to-do list, which might help alleviate this. I'll try to make sure that the more general structure isn't conducive to a planar fitness landscape as I go a long as well.

What about you create some balance in the cells. Say, for example, larger cells require more food to reproduce and use energy more quickly. Increase the time it takes for them to reproduce, as well.

So what would happen in the end is that every mutation is technically balanced, but those creatures which specialise in a specific trait would be better. For example, photocytes produce light. It might be useful in a vegetable, but it would also require them to be larger so they can keep paying upkeep for the light. It would also allow a larger network of cells, as those within the light would be able to pay the upkeep and spread the light to those in the shadow. Predatory cells which developed it would eventually breed it out, going either for large numbers and small fuel requirements or large cells and lots of weapons.

Except if their prey was attracted to light.

Exactly! Which would mean that it would be a trait that would be bred for in the case of an all dark environment.

My planned parasite cell has failed. :( The host cell was set to female, massive amounts of chloroplasts and starches, shared energy and connected to anything. THe parasite cell was photosynthetic with no chloroplasts and four starches, connected to everything and was assexual. They connected well enough, but the parasite wouldn't breed.

Yeah what is with the breeding-rate? Some of em breed like rabbits and split every second, others just eat until they're full and then slowly die of old age, alone.

Guess which one wins :)

The ones that don't breed would be too large to feed themselves and reproduce, so they starve.

Oh, no, it's even small ones who definitely had enough to eat. Perhaps they have a slow or non-existent digestion, I'll check on that.

Thatd be an improvement yes, althou it's not really a good simulator of evolution untill complex adaptations actualy have to be evolved from scratch and determines success only indirectly through complex emergent proccesses.

It'd be neat to see charts of population growth.

Ah, there it is, some of them don't have energy storage at all, and then don't multiply.

Well, it's just breeding for survival traits.

If you leave it on for more than a few minutes, it pretty quickly becomes a bunch of plant cells.
