Max Fps 30? is that right for my system?
« on: June 05, 2007, 04:34:00 pm »

I have a CPU "AMD Turion X2 Mobile Technology Tl-52 1.6GHZ" and i have for graphics card a "ATI Radeon Xpress Series" my computer is a laptop with dual cores and the fps is capped at 30 even on a desert map.

My computer came installed with Vista and i tried running Dwarf Fortress with Xp but there waas no improvement athough i did not find drivers for XP when i tried it with XP.

Please help what could it be? does my cpu just suck? i think 30 fps is pretty low, on my home computer i get over 200.

I had the same problem. It's Vista 100%. I installed Xp on the machine after I got fed up with Vista. DF now runs 10x as fast even while other memory intensive programs are running. In short: While you may have a dual core computer, vista does NOT take advantage of it.
If it isn't Vista, then I don't know. My comp has 2 crappy Intel chips and it runs DF just fine.

I have my FPS.ini set to 100 already, so i must not have done something right when i tried DF on XP because i dual installed XP on my laptop and tried to run Dwarf fortress that way. mabe if i go and download the graphics card drivers for my windows XP operating system too? i guess ill reinstall xp and try again.

Yeah, having the right drivers has been very important for people.  That might be the problem.

Find out what the actual parts in your system are... for example, most sound cards say they are x y or z brand but are really just Realtek ALC8xx series or lower.  Reference drivers are 99% of the time the best driver for every single device in a system, even laptops.  Your video card is a Radeon x series? go gnab the newest radeon driver from ati.amd.com and the same for every part in your system.  Ive even had a SATA driver change framerates of DF.

It's a cardinal rule of mine to update all drivers possible in a computer with the newest available reference drivers at least once every 3 months.

Heh, my cardinal rule is DON'T UPGRADE NUTHIN LESS YOU NEED TO! Drivers, hardware, software...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Of course, 'need' is completely subjective...

It's Vista.

I get 50-80 FPS regularly on my machine (see below) but on another machine much better with Vista, it drags ass at 20-40 FPS (see below)

My System:
AMD Athlon 64 Venice, 1.8 GHz core, 1 GHz HT
2 GB PC3200 Dual Channel DDR 2.0-3-2-6 timings
ATI Radeon x550 video

Vista System:
Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Conroe, 2.93GHz core 1066 MHz FSB
2 GB PC2-6400 DDR2 dual channel, 4-4-4-12 timings
ATI Radeon x1950 video

if you think 20-40 FPS is lagging butt, try getting at max 7-10 FPS with vista.

I have only played DF on my new Vista laptop...

So is the low FPS not normal, then?

Way to go to necro a 8 month old thread, pal.

BTW, DF do not take advantage of dual cores. If you have a dual core, DF will only work on one which mean it will run only at half your computer capacity.
