I have not heard of anyone not having access to the servers(in any of the regions) for such long periods of time. In the US this is the first time servers have been brought down for emergency maintenance. Overall, I have to say it's been a relatively smooth launch considering how many people are trying to connect to just 3 login servers(clusters).

What I'm seeing right now is that, anyone who had a connection to the game in the last few hours is still able to play. Anyone that is trying to log in for the first time is completely boned.

That's terrible. Sorry for anyone experiencing that. For those in the US it seems that the servers are being rebooted right now to test the changes they have made. If all goes well, game should be back up in 10-20 mins

You don't need to explain online DRM to me, thanks.
I didn't intend any offense, not sure why you'd react that way. I don't know you, all I saw was your statement:

And "always-online" refers to the fact it has to talk to a home server to play the game.

I guess I misunderstood what you meant. Sorry about that.

And now the servers are going to be down until 1:30 PDT. In other words, almost 2 hours from now.

Nice. Fucking. Job. Blizzard.

but I was pleasantly surprised at the difficulty ramp-up past the beta content.

Yeah I instantly noticed that, shit my pants with 3 of those charging bull elites, and a tree pulling me into them constantly.

I'm level 24 with the monk right now, servers down, but my roommate is still playing wtf.

forsaken, I've been hearing from people that D3 IS always-online, and that continuing to play when you lose your connection is actually a bug, not a feature (and that it will sometimes disconnect you - without saving).

So who knows. :/ Maybe it only makes additional checks under certain circumstances?

Hm... that would make a certain sense because I know it registers your drops and rare items with the server so you can sell them later on the auction house.

Meh. Pirates will crack and play it while paying customers get punished. I knew history would repeat itself. I'm glad I didn't buy it yet.

I have to say though, the game is pretty good, the beta was not a proper thing to judge it for at all.

Does anyone have a guest pass for the starter edition I could use? I'd like to see how well it runs on my computer before I buy. Thanks!

Is it in the normal boxed copy?  If so I can send you one after I get off work.  (approx 4 hours from now)
