[38A] Water tank not filling past first level
« on: February 13, 2008, 01:09:00 am »

I built this huge water container over the past few versions, and I finally got to the point where I could fill it up.  However, it doesn't seem to fill past the first level, which is full 7/7.  The whole thing is about six stories deep, constructed with floodgates on one side, rock wall on the opposite, and the other two walls are glass windows.

Which level is your water source on?

Falling water doesn't stack on top of water filled tiles - this is to prevent things like piles of water from forming at the base of waterfalls.  If you want to make a deep pond, you'll have to make the water flow down to the bottom with some sort of ramp.

I do have to ask the obvious question (because it happened to me the first time I tried something like this) - is there a channel or unhatched stairway between the levels of your tank?  If not the water is being stopped from flowing down by the floors between levels.

Keldor: Not sure that makes sense...  What happens to the extra water then?  Does it just go away?  I mean, with the current U-bend bug we can pull water out of nowhere, but if you dump water on top of other water, does it really just vanish?

Is the lower level an aquifer?  Water should stack if it has nowhere else to go.

Are you trying to pump in water from the bottom? Water pumps just generate water on the tile they pump to instead of creating a true flow, so no pressure will be generated and water won't be pushed upwards.

My experience is that if you dump water on top of other water, it does indeed vanish if there is already 7/7 water there.

Huh.  That's not been my experience.  Not if you're dumping into an enclosed chamber anyway.

If an aquifer is involved, that will soak it up.  Probably a river will too.

I haven't done it myself, but I know I've seen videos in the archive of people filling multi-level chambers with a stream of water from above.
