Not The Best First Impression
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:13:47 pm »

So earlier today I ended up starting another fortress site, out of curiosity for what I'd find. As I was going about my business, five migrant Dwarves arrived. I didn't think anything about this and kept doing what I was doing.

Then it got strange. I kept getting messages saying that a dwarf tried to give another dwarf food or drink, but there was nothing to give. I got confused by this since I had plenty of food and drink still. As such, I kept going on despite the message, not really noticing that the migrants weren't even with my group at all.

Then, I got the message that one of my Dwarves was going insane. I zoomed in on the area to see that it was one of the migrants. Turns out that all five of them were stuck on the other side of a river, unable to get across, and they were all starving and going crazy. Not to mention they were being accosted by a bunch of Badgers.

Realizing this, I quickly went and made a bridge across to them, rescuing them and allowing them to come on in and eat and drink.

Sadly, their moods are miserable and unhappy, and I imagine that if they could, they'd all give me the great Dwarven middle finger for nearly starving to death without help. I'm honestly hoping that I can get them back up to being content and that they don't get worse.

I considered that, honestly, but felt bad for their suffering. XD

See, you're just going to have to stop that sort of behaviour now before it gets out of hand.  Dwarves are replacable.  And more importantly, 5/17's enough to set off a tantrum spiral if you're unlucky.  Gotta learn to stop caring about the dwarves and treat them as disposable drones (except any that get to Legendary status in a profession or earn a title in combat, of course) like the rest of us.  Otherwise you'll feel terrible once the first dragon or FB with a Dust or Fire attack turns up on your doorstep.

I assume the river was frozen when you embarked?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

This is pretty bad. Worse, even, if a brook freezes as new migrants are crossing it. Happened to me once. Wiped out the entire wave.

Also, nobody would have cared if they died. They hadn't been in the fortress proper, so couldn't possibly have made any friends.

hey now.  i love my dwarves and do all i can for them.  only i care enough to assign them to a burron on the bridge i call "the reinjurizor" so that they can get a proper second opinion at the doctor's office!  when i release fully armed goblins right next to the hospital, is not the military always standing by?  what's more, i keep the crypts well stocked with empty coffins!  i have yet to kill my duchess, despite the fact that once a season she locks someone up for a season because she chose gold items for mandats, despite the fact that we have no gold and never did.  i'm even trying to set her up with the king!

That is what makes or breaks an overseer, some of them are apathetic to their minions they watch over while some just...never want to see a dwarf in the "deceased" pile unless they suffered from an unfortunate accident. Good job for you! Looks like I'm not alone.

Think you missed the sarcasm there, Tiruin.  You might want to give RAK's post another read.

I only care about my legendaries, dwarves I find deserving of a custom name, and the military dwarves. Everyone else is just the embodiment of physical labor.

But by Armok, those dwarves whom I find deserving will have the nicest bedrooms they ever laid eyes upon. And a massive tomb for the designated Ruler-Dwarf, who is always trained to be my best engraver.

My dwarves are like children to me, they must be FIRMLY reprimanded when they do something wrong, but as long as they do as they're told it's rivers of booze and masterwork roasts forever in streets engraved with the triumphs of their ancestors.

However, troublemakers soon realize that there are worse places in the fort than the mines. I exile them tot he power relay levels, where they become engineers who maintain the rest of the fort, with naught but plump helmets and just enough barrels for it all. their homes are rough, dank, and have naught but a simple bed in a hole in the wall, maybe with a scavenged door made from the wood of an abandoned axle, or from clearing the trees out of the canals in the plumbing level.

i'm half serious... i do do all that stuff, and i do try to keep everyone alive, but i am not overgrieved when someone dies.  i'd have abandoned this fort in the middle of "the goblin years" if i did, as we lost about half our population (but no tantrum spirals, i am proud to say)

A good overseer isn't willy nilly with his deaths, but doesn't overly mourn them either, unless it was a really cool dwarf. I do the same things.

I try to prevent deaths. But having people die in battle on my side makes it more 'realistic', than a few champions hacking through a host 10 times their size. So a couple deaths during a siege actually don't make me sad at all. Of course, unless said deaths includes my high leveled armor or weaponsmiths.
