I'll have to try to start a new game with a smaller country later then. At a severe downsized situation (peace is reigning, and even so I'm powerful enough to deal easily with South America had I need), I'm at a total of 201 deployed units, plus 102 in reserve which is more than I care to deal with.

Curiosity, is it normal in the game for countries such as Brazil, that is, in a relatively remote location from any other country that could feasibly pose a threat, to simply pass years upon years without any conflict? After my initial defensive war against Argentina, after which Brazil now borders Buenos Aires, all have been at peace in South America. Even the risks of my neighbors declaring war have gone to zero or near so.

You might want to try their latest Beta Patch.  It's not automatic, but adds teeth to the AI.
