Hematite's what I always end up with since it can show up near volcanoes. Goblinite is the most useful, though, because it's available no matter your embark.

No it's not. Embark on an island and you may not get goblinite at all. And goblinite isn't always iron - in my last embark it was copper and silver (which was actually terrific because my mayor had a billon fetish).

Well, yeah, but in any fort that isn't boring :P .

Hematite. You can't have Magnetite near a volcano unless you're lucky, whereas hematite is still much more common.
I had a bunch of magnetite on my first volcano which caused me to start this.  ???

Then you got lucky :P

You have to have a separate biome with sedimentary stone, because a volcano cannot occur in the same place as sedimentary stone.

Hematite. The colour is awesome, and it's blood rock!

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Magnetite. It's everywhere and has a nice shade. (Easy on the eyes, unlike RED GODDAMN SAND)

Iron oxcide is my fave, turns everything it rubs on an orangeish red color.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

My favorite is Thunderbolt Iron, but since that's not in the game I choose hematite, for both its color and its name. Blood stone for the Blood God!

As dwarves slowly lose their stats over time it's natural for them to get fatter as they age because there's no activities to train healing rate.
so dwarves that die of old age in DF dont get shriveled and weak, but huge round masses of meat and fat that explode spectacularly upon their final birthday?

Another nice thing about hematite is that if you have enough of it that you don't need to smelt it, it has a great dark-red color and a relatively high value (for raw stone) so it's an excellent and under-utilized choice for building.

My favorite iron ore is magnetite:

I took this photo at the Rushmore Cave gift shop. A lot of gift shops have cabinets full of small polished rocks and ores that kids (or geology/DF fans) can buy, and there are also whole stores dedicated to selling rocks, ores, gems, fossils, and crafts made from all those. I bought a 2-pound chunk of Obsidian from one in Keystone, South Dakota. It's pretty cool to have something that you deal with in dwarf fortress on a regular basis.

My favorite is magnetite hematite magnetite anything but limonite. If I wanted yellow, I'd use orthoclase, and if I wanted non-magma-safe, I'd use one of the non-magma-safe layer stones that I'm almost certain to have.
