My presence in these fora is a bit superfluous with RedKing and SalmonGod around.

With just one kid a leash is a bit superfluous, but there's other methods. Grocery store: kid runs away. I let her. After 30 seconds she's lost me (I'm still keeping an eye on her, hidden).
Then she becomes scared because she's alone, and just before she gets too scared, here comes Hero-Daddy to save the day. And don't you walk away again, young lady!
What doesn't maim her permanently just makes her stronger. Team Parent still disagrees on what exactly is a "psychological traumatic experience" and how that translates to "permanent damage", though.

Also, teach the kid what to do when you get lost. Ours is pretty articulate for her age, so, if she loses us, we taught her to go to (in that order):
- Cashier-person
- Police
- A woman
