Stuff you can use:
« on: July 15, 2011, 11:17:13 pm »

This is a thread for resources online that are meant to be useful to people in general. For ease of use, I will copy and paste every entry into the first title post. Please post links along with a short description of what your resource is/does. Instructions can be included if necessary. Also a place for cool links....

[Note: I'm currently leaving this pretty blank because I'm curious what other people will suggest. 4chan and similar sites will not be posted.... Otherwise feel free to suggest categories that will help others.]

I think I have to go buy a tie, now, just so that I can practice tying it.

Because that looks so cool.

KaelGotDwarves mentioned slickdeals.net awhile ago in a thread, and I've become a bit fond of it. Takes a bit of effort to set up the way you want but it's great once it gets going. Sort of like a coupon site but it really covers just about any kind of sale, for just about anything you care to look for and you can configure it to notify you about specific items.

Also posting to keep an eye on this, because I've really been wanting something like this for quite awhile.

http://what-do-you-do.net/

What Do You Do; the web comic where YOU decide what the character does next.

(PS: it's confusing if you don't read from the first beginning)

Also, yes, the art gets better over time. Compare a recent panel to an early one.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

For some reason Google Docs does not seem to want to format into a hyperlink.

Unless you hate Google for any reason, Google Docs. Document processing without installing stuff on your computer, and instantly sharing them with others. Spreadsheets, text documents, pretty much everything you'd need.
If you regularly need to sync stuff with a group, you could also use Subversion. It's a bit more involved then Google docs but it allows synchronization of any kind of document, for example we used it while working on a little 3D XNA game at our uni and it handled 3D models as well as the code files. If you're on windows, Tortoise is a useful SVN client with a built-in GUI. (if you're on windows, remember to never use two maps with the same name, where one has a capital letter and the other not. The SVN server is case sensitive but windows isn't so you'll get all kinds of errors)

Alternatively, if submitting and merging documents is too much work, you could also use dropbox, which has less features (no document merging and no forking for example, so you'll have to handle those things by hand), but it's also easier to use. I also use it regularely as a replacement for image uploading software as you can get links for stuff stored in the public part of your dropbox folder.

Here are some webcomics that I like to read.

http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021104 (Mad Science themed comic)
http://www.goblinscomic.com/06252005/ (D&D themed comic)
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?viewpage=archive (Problem Sleuth and Homestuck can be found here, both good comics)
http://thenoobcomic.com/index.php?pos=1 (MMO themed comic)
http://darthsanddroids.net/episodes/0001.html (D&D + Starwars themed)

I actually haven't read this one except a few pages in, but it doesn't look to bad so far so I'll list it too.

www.prezi.com

A seriously cool bit of web based presentation software with some nifty features. I use it constantly for work (teaching/lecturing) and it beats the ass of the default option of powerpoint.

NEWS

Don't you dare go out in this world without knowing what's happening today! Make it a habit to always read the news in the morning. And yes, amazingly enough, there's life outside the USA too (dragons, goblins, barbaric horse-people). For a good view upon this world, skim through all of these, every day:

http://www.ap.org/
http://www.reuters.com/
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/
http://www.itar-tass.com/en/
http://www.dw-world.de/
http://english.aljazeera.net/
http://allafrica.com/

And finally, if you've got some time left:

http://news.google.com/

All of the above have "mobile" versions too.

-----------------------------------------------------

General information

Spend 60 minutes everyday, in here:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/

And here:
http://www.ehow.com/how-to.html

And obviously
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Damn Intresting - the site was last updated in 2009 but it's full of good articles. Lots of things you didn't know in easy to read format.

-----------------------------------

Things to buy

A multitool.
Research before getting one. If research is not your thing, you should probably get one of these:
http://sogknives.com/store/tools.html
http://www.leatherman.com/category/multi-tools
http://www.gerber-tools.com/

Take this with you when going out of town. Keep a box of these in your medicine cabinet.
http://www.aquatabs.com/

Get one for your car.
http://www.thefirstaidkits.com/all-purpose-first-aid-kits/
And you should always have this one (or a similar one) in your pocket.
http://www.asmc.de/en/Gear/First-Aid/First-Aid/First-Aid/First-Aid-Kit-Mil-Tec-small-red-p.html

Get 5 of these and stuff them in your freezer. They last 10 years and you never know when you'll need one.
http://www.mreinfo.com/

Get this one and hang it on your house/car keys
http://www.swisstechtools.com/productdetail.aspx?PID=BrmD4QlW5MUA

Check if it is legal in your area to own this:
http://www.pepper-spray-store.com/
And get one, if it is.

Optional but recommended stuff

EOD Robotics breach bars and pry bars.
http://www.eodrobotics.com/EOD-Bars_c_8.html

For just 9$ get yourself the MID-Breach Bar. A great utility knife, general tool and pry bar that you will love and use.
Have the large one one in the tool shed, or in the car trunk, tool box, kitchen drawer and if allowed by law, the MID-one in your EDC (every day carry) Kit.
Cheap as dirt yet impressive quality.
You just need to wrap some paracord around it.

And while you're doing this, check these guys out:
http://www.countycomm.com/Whats%20New.htm
You should at least take a look at the
-Spectra sewing thread - you never know when you need indestructible thread
-Pocket Straight Razor - A small blade hidden in a plastic sheath - for all your precision cutting needs. This is the sharpest thing I've ever seen. It won't hold an edge for too long, it's not meant for that. It's supposed to cut like laser for a few times. However, at 1.7$ you can buy them in bulk.

And speaking of EDC Kits, there you go:
http://edcforums.com/

Swiss Army Knives. Arguably not the best of the best, but great quality for a good price.
