The farthest bend of the river
« on: September 03, 2006, 07:51:00 am »

My dwarves on "Give Water" seem to like taking their buckets to the western bend of the outside river right up near the northernmost edge of the map, rather than taking advantage of the many wells, the cave river, or any part of the outside river near the gate.  This leads to many exciting adventures with harpies, cougars, ogres, and the terrible scary groundhogs.

Dwarves try to get water from the nearest "straight-line path" (not caring for obstacles like say a 150 ft rock wall) source. So if you have your buckets in the furniture stockpile near the western bend instead of say very close to the cave river, they'll trot all the way around  your fortress to get at what they consider the closest.

My buckets and furniture stockpiles are all near the center of the map - mostly between the cave river and chasm.  Nowhere near the northwest corner of the map, where they keep trying to go.

Are they actually getting water there or are they just trying to cross the rocks up there on their way to some place else?  Is there a clear way across the middle of the river?

It was happening during winter, so they were walking across the frozen water to the far side, then heading northward in a straight line on the far bank towards that bend.

All right, I'll take a look at some point.
