The free and/or cheap RTS thread
« on: July 15, 2011, 07:27:44 pm »

I would like either free or very cheap RTS games to be posted here. All I ever seem to find is crap, so I would like to recruit the bay 12ers here to help me find some good ones. I prefer games with moderatly low system requirments, but with a large amount of content. I dont do multiplayer much, but I do enjoy a good comp stomp every now and then, so the game should have bots to practice on. I especially love large scale battles. Now, bay 12ers, commence searching!

Sins of a Solar Empire is good. I think that the trinity which includes the 3 updates is $20 so that isn't too bad imo. For more info, check out the forum thread. It should be on the first page.

I read it, and thats actually what inspired me to make this thread, so I can draw in more good RTS games. Does Sins have a skirmish mode on the mp maps with bots and no other players? (in other words, a comp stomp?)

I think some of the early Command and Conquer games were released as freeware recently.

Free game list?! What?! I never noticed that. What was it, buried on page 42 of the forum?

I will not be one to recommend Sins. Not worth it. I will point to C&C First Decade.

No but I think the OP's looking for a more specific genre, unless that list is seperated into genres. They also said cheap games so there might be a lot of games listed here that wouldn't be there.

The list is separated into genres.

I have to recommend Warzone 2100.  It's free, and actually good.  http://www.wz2100.net

Depending on your computer, Star Ruler might be good for you. Steam Game, has a demo.

Has large scale battles, ship customization, destructible planets and stars. AI is mighty nice also.

Used to be on sale, might still be, 10 bucks base price if that's very cheap to you. Doesn't make sense not to try the demo anyway.

Bah, who needs the free game list? Lets get some stuff posted here. Besides, Im willing to pay 20 to 30 bucks for a good RTS, which doesnt exactly count as free. Just keep the games coming, and I will check them out.

At a budget of 20-30, I would recommend considering Company of Heroes, Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, or Command and Conquer: Generals.
