"X cancels drink: unconscious"
« on: September 03, 2006, 07:31:00 am »

I've had this happen to two dwarves now, where they get wounded in the upper body (first  might've been head, not sure), aren't bleeding, but keep going unconscious so often they can't ever take care of themselves.  They wake up and try to do it themselves often enough so the other dwarves don't "recover wounded", and the end result is that they just die.

Usually they'll seek help if they are that messed up.  If you can catch the exact wound pattern that is confusing it at some point, that would help me figure out what it isn't catching.

Just happened again, except that this time the death was by starvation.  The dwarf in question had lost both eyes (dark grey); no other wounds (I guess the rest healed).  He could walk around fine - except that after a few steps, he'd pass out, and never actually managed to finish getting a drink or food.

Other dwarves were from time to time starting "give water" commands, but apparently weren't ever finishing it (though they DO finish it for the bedridden dwarves).

Got another one.  Again, both eyes missing; some other minor wounds.  When he's unconscious, he's "stunned".

IIRC, permanent pain from phantom limbs/eyes is supposed to be fixed when scarring is added.

I have to ask, why your dwarves lose their eyes so often? Did you setup some eveil torture chamber in there?

I had a dwarf lose an arm at the shoulder, right next to a well, and he didn't even remain conscious long enough to complete a drink job.

At one point I had three dwarves missing eyes in my fort: they meant I couldn't see any of my announcements without going to the announcement page because they all were cancelling jobs because of being unconscious

I got this bug on one of my forts.  Think I still have it going, actually...

One of my miners got a mangled (I think?  It was red), left lung, and randomly passes out from time to time.

Edit: Ah, yes, I do.  I don't have anywhere to upload it, but if you want it, I can email it.  v0.22.107.21a, from what I can figure.

Yeah, the eye ones are on to-do until scarring, which'll come up after the next few core items.

I'm not sure about the lung...  the lunged should probably be waiting for bed, but apparently they try to tough it out.  Hard core.

Today One, people have suggested before that a medic kind of skill/dwarf should perhaps be implemented - dwarves that boost healing time by taking care of wounded all the time...well, assuming that they don't have other tasks as well.

If such a thing was ever to be added, then include it so that they "water" unconcious dwarves as well and also try and feed them when they are concious. It feels a bit rough that wounded are almost totally ignored by everyone else not to mention that they have an insanely long recovery time.

The only wounded that are completely ignored are these erroneous ones we are discussing that aren't seeking help properly, mostly due to the phantom eye/limb pain problems.  Dwarves already feed/water the seriously injured, not that those health care suggestions weren't valid.

Yeah, I know that wounded are already fed and watered, but I meant that "medic dwarves" would also at least water them if they are unconcious. Or do dwarves normally already try and feed and water unconcious dwarves - cause I'm now assuming that they don't.

And to stick in a tiny addition - medic dwarves could also try and feed/water those dwarves that are really thirsty/hungry but for some reason can't get food/water. I dunno if it's cause of a bug but I've had dwarves starve to death or dehydrate to death whilst being right next to food/water sources. A bit  funny really, but these cases have been rare.

I've had that happen as well, I was told by a friend that it's an issue with where the dwarves consider a pace that is allowed to be drunk from and that not every tile next to water is drinkable (and the middle of a bridge greater than 2 tiles wide is a valid location.  o.O )

Is this some new issue?  I haven't hard of dwarves dying of thirst on wide bridges before.
