The thing that boggles me is how some of the House Reps (typically the Tea Partiers) are saying, "We don't believe the "experts" and "economists" who say that this will be a horrible thing if we default, so we think we should default rather than raise a single tax dollar."

I.e. "We don't understand math and/or economics, therefore we don't believe in them." I wonder if these folks watched one too many Looney Tunes and think that if you never learn the law of gravity, it doesn't apply to you.

I'm seeing comparisons to hurricane predictions and Y2K, which infuriates me. I'd like to see a webcomic sequel to Caveman Science-Fiction entitled Caveman Economics, which plays out like this:

Quote
Bachmann: Me no am believing in numbers. Me not raise debt ceiling!
Others: You go too far! Numbers am real!
Bachmann: No! Me am make country stronger!

*later, when the cavemen are reduced to the pre-Stone Age*
Bachmann: Me am go too far! But it all Obama fault.

That is hilarious.

That said, it's not Bachmann who's the problem here- she's a clown. An intentional farce designed to distract people and direct the conversation. She doesn't convince anyone to agree with her, but she makes formerly conservative ideology seem merely moderate. By wanting to ban contraceptives, she makes wanting to ban abortions seem sane.

No, she has no hope of converting or convincing people to her own personal insanity. The people we need to talk about are the 44 anonymous republicans who act as the muscle of the filibuster.

So we are back from the economic debates to political topics. Good ;D! but I am no American. So it's hard for me to comment on issues of U.S politic games. However, I do wondering what's the majority views of people around people do live in U.S? Or are most people just blissfully not knowing what's coming for they very soon?

I think a lot of people have an idea that something bad is coming but either:

A. Think we're going to default, don't fully know what that's going to mean for them, don't want to think about it, and blame everyone in Washington.
B. Think we'll cut a last-minute deal like we did for the 2010 budget and are annoyed at all the political theater.
C. Like the Tea Party, think it's a bunch of malarkey and that nothing all that bad will happen.

That said, there are also probably a lot of people who are busier hating Casey Anthony or whatever other pop distraction is available right now.

Me personally? I'm worried. In the past, I'd put myself in the B camp above. But there's a lot of freshman Republicans who are genuinely mavericks, in that they have no concept of how politics and compromise work, and they're quite willing to burn the house down in the name of ideological purity.

Do you think there is any chance that after the debt ceiling is raised the US might take long-term measures to reduce their debt?  I mean, they can't keep raising it forever right?

RedKing: I am in B camp.

Levi: Only if the democrats regain power and pursue a strategy like Bill Clinton did.

If I had faith in humanity, I would say this is the end of the regressive republican party and that people will realize that they are playing political games with the fate of our nation for personal gain. Then cast them out of office and embrace the conservative democratic party, or dare I say an actual progressive or liberal party, though I have no idea what party that may be.

But I don't. So there is the potential that the debt limit will be hit, the government will shut down. I will loose my job. The world economy will collapse. And this brief and imperfect renaissance of freedom and liberty will have been a fleeting footnote in history as the world descends into a new dark age.

My cynicism MAY be approaching critical mass.

I think the next round of popular revolutions will be interesting. Imagine what people with a taste of the intellectual freedom of the internet might build if they don't have archaic and useless power structures in the way.

President 4chan? I'm not optimistic.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

President Rick Astley and the new constitution will be written in lolcat and then end in a fresh prince of bell air reference.

Uhh...if you think OUR politics are a clusterfuck, you should look at India. I honestly don't comprehend how anything gets done in India.

@Nadaka:
This is why I'll never be a Democrat. When they have power, they have no freakin' clue how to use it. They had the trifecta for two years and the only thing they pulled off was the healthcare bill. And that took forever. Whereas the Republicans seem to be able to dictate government policy with a minority because they know how to play the game. They've got the Democrats so f**king spooked about being labelled "liberal" or "socialist" that they won't commit to anything without checking the polls first.

President Rick Astley and the new constitution will be written in lolcat and then end in a fresh prince of bell air reference.

If it's not staged I wouldn't want to be into Obama's shoes.
Default the debt and ruin the county now or make unbearable spending cuts and ruin it later...

What did you guys do to the GOP? It's like their members hate America's guts.

But the most hilarious thing is that the connexion between the US current financial trouble and Bush tax cuts are not obvious to everyone.
