Not a joke.

I don't see why the Oath of Office makes that much of a big deal...

I used to be really excited at the prospect of you guys getting a 51st state, for some reason. This'd disappoint me.

I refuse.  We've actually got a budget surplus, no need to get mixed in with you other states.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Puerto Rico is apparently going to be deciding its official status (territory, independent, free associate, or state) by the end of 2012. From what I've heard, things are looking slanted towards statehood at the moment, so you may get to see us get a 51st state. Of course, that means changing the flag. Again.

There also is, I kid you not, a very minor political party in New Zealand who's sole goal is to have the country annexed by the US. Seriously. They even have a half-broken website.

Hah, oh man, good luck. We had the decision to become part of Australia a while back and we didn't take it then, either.

The weird thing is that I can find these tiny, very unsupported "Quick, join the US!" parties all over the planet just from reading Wikipedia. I have no idea why someone would think to form one, as opposed to a party that has a platform outside of jumping ship to another country.

There's also been a movement down here in S. Arizona to seperate from the rest of Arizona. If it gains any momentum at all, that'd also be a 51st or 52nd state.

Honestly I don't count on it happening though. Even if the group gets it on the ballot in 2012 (feat in itself), Congress still would need to pass it too. Local news has given it some fair coverage, but it's probably not going to be any more successful than the myriad of other state partition proposals out there.

This is the man I want to be when I reach his age. A nitpicker so spectacular that a constitution gets changed as a consequence. Everything I aspire to be, right there.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Heck, us people in Washington state want to divide the state in half too.  Quite literally, the west side of the Cascade Mountains is suburbia and liberal, while the east side is rural and conservative.  And the Democrats always manage to outvote the Republicans here since there's well, more of them.

As an inversion to this, didn't Palin or someone try to start a movement to get Alaska to cede from the United States?

Texas and California should both divide themselves. They're too big for being one state, and if they both do it then neither political party would gain an edge.

Not as far as I know. Palin is an extreme nationalist anyway, secession doesn't make sense.

I know that there are small movements for North Virginia and Long Island to become their own states.
