I think that it was Palin's husband who was, at one point, part of a secessionist movement. I believe that association was brought up as part of an anti-Palin campaign thingamajig, which is ridiculous to me because she presented plenty of reasons not to vote for her herself. No need to bring up association fallacies and suchlike.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

There's also been a movement down here in S. Arizona to seperate from the rest of Arizona. If it gains any momentum at all, that'd also be a 51st or 52nd state.
Why is that, if you don't mind me asking?

Yes, all seven people in north dakota vote to change the constitution.

I refuse.  We've actually got a budget surplus, no need to get mixed in with you other states.

Which is probably related to the fact that you get 2 dollars back from the federal government for every dollar you pay in federal taxes.  Way to go rugged individualism.  Meanwhile us elitists on the east and west coasts are subsidizing you bastards in the middle and dont even have a controlling share of the vote in the government we pay for.

My bet is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan secedes from the LP, and either becomes a new state, becomes sovereign, or buggers off and joins Canada. Then the LP is screwed.

I don't actually know myself, but the vast majority of the state division movements I've seen are either because one area of a state is very conservative and another is very liberal, or to try and make a high-population area of the state its own member of the Union in order to get more representation in the House for themselves (this deprives the low population areas of the state that same House representation, and as such they violently oppose these movements). So it's most likely one of those two.

Yep, sounds like Washington. Seattle and its surrounds are very liberal, the rest of the state is very conservative. (except for a pocket around the Tri-Cities) As a result, both want to separate for political reasons. Both parts know it can't happen, though. We on the east side need the west side's ports and urban industry. Those on the west side need the east's agriculture, mining, and lumber.

North Virginia
We already have West Virginia, we don't need less state! :)

It would be quite bizarre, as if this went through West Virginia would be more north than North Virginia, and the parts of Virginia that didn't have bites taken out of it would be very oddly shaped.

Of course, since Virginia would be weakened then, I would lead Carolina Superior in a glorious warpath of conquest against the Virginian Remnant.

But you would have to get both Carolinas to merge before becoming Carolina Superior, and we could become The Alliance of Virginia by then.

The Great State of North Carolina is already Carolina Superior as it is. Integrating Carolina Inferior into it would only taint the amazing whole of Carolina Superior. No, Carolina Inferior must die in a rain of nuclear fire. Trust me, I learned this all from RedKing, he knows what he's talking about.

You could just dump a tidal wave on it instead, nuclear fire will mess up the beaches :P

Are you telling me you wouldn't want to see a glass beach? C'mon. Even if there is a little residual radiation. Just imagine how incredibly badass and beautiful it would be, at the same time.

Oregon is similar too.  Solution: Make the dividing line North-South instead of East-West.

It would indeed be awesome.

Actually, why wast good nuclear materiel on a Carolina? Thermite should glass the beaches well enough. Or napalm, but that would be bloody expensive unless we took over China and Saudi Arabia at the same time. Or synthesized our own out of nowhere.

Yeah. I've seen two factors cited as reasons for the movement, that is the basis of one of them.
Politics - Tucson being a college town, it's a bit more dem than Phoenix. There's opposition to SB1070 down here, and people in the movement cite dissatisfaction with the direction of Arizona legislature as the reason for separation.
Economics - Some feel we're getting short straw when it comes to state economics. Though it probably has ties to the above reason.
