Above-ground caverns?
« on: July 13, 2011, 11:24:25 pm »

God DAMN I've had some weird stuff going on. Anyway, I found an above ground formation, with shrubs, grass, and other such above-ground plants, but it's shaped identically to the caverns and, get this, actually has some cavern plants in it

Also, the magma sea, which is at level -28, is leaking into the caverns.

The hell happened to cause this? No screenshots, it's pretty much self-explanatory.

EDIT: Upon further looking, it appears the magma sea is literally overlapping the first cavern layer. Well, that's one embark down the drain. Is this what happens when you decide 100 volcanoes is prudent on a medium world?

EDIT 2: Another embark spat up a place with two volcanoes, one in the caverns, a slab of semi-molten rock going all the way down into HFS, and more than 370 Z-levels up for what seems to be no reason at all. Interesting world I genned here!

World gen just screws up sometimes. Stuff like this happens. Nobody know the exact cause.

Picture it as Armok smiling upon your embark. And then vomiting on it.

For every world of order, there exists a world of equal chaos.

Things like this usually happen due to errors during worldgen.  It will happen often if you do things during worldgen like:
  • open another copy of DF
  • use a program that manipulates the DF memory map

It still (rarely) happens by itself, even if you don't do anything dumb.

If it's not utterly broken, I would try it. Sounds pretty interesting.

Well, damn, sorry, deleted my saves folder because it was starting to get cluttered. Also, oddly enough, I genned another medium world with near identical parameters and got the same style glitches. Just make a medium world with 30/100 volcanoes and 100 mineral scarcity and see what happens, I guess. My personal problem was that the game would crash on 50% of the embark; on the second world, there was another slab of semi-molten rock, AND HFS was being flooded by magma, AND the volcano was a big tower that went 5 z-levels above the second highest point on the map.

That's ok, I meant that if I ever run into that myself, not that I'd like to try the exact same world.
