[38a] Fireflies
« on: February 12, 2008, 08:08:00 am »

So, I've found a magma vent.  Not wanting any wayward miners or metalsmiths to get toasted by magma dwellers, I sent a crossbow-equipped recruit over to combat the threat.

Within moments, he had obliterated a fire man by blowing its head off, as well as a few other choice limbs.   And then this happened:

I know flies are tenacious little buggers, but swimmming through three levels of molten lava seems a bit extreme for their slight frames.  They don't seem to mind, though.

The small remains scattered about are not vermin corpses.  They are fire man bits.

Vermin are amazing critters sometimes.  Reminds me of the squirrel I found in my magma channel back in the 2D version.

This is Bug 513.  I'll get to it at some point.

Heh, at least you don't have pools of molten flies at the bottom of your volcano ;p

I had a fire man come out of my magma vent only to be tackled by a dog and fall to their mutual deaths in the center of the earth.

At one point, the imps in this little lava pocket lined up on the "shore", all facing the stairway that led down there.

Four of 'em.  All in a perfect little line.  Just waiting for someone to come down there.

Would giving them an actual body fix the problem? Or is any vermin creature immune to heat?

Vermin are stored and handled differently from units for speed reasons.  It likely doesn't even check the liquid/temperature of squares that vermin enter or are placed in at this point, though I thought I did some of that, which is why this is a bug and not an incomplete feature.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that it is a "swarm" creature instead of just a "single" creature.  I've burned beetles and roaches to death (takes forever though, seeing as they don't really die.  They just wear out), but this is a "swarm" of flies.

Swarms already seem to be slightly different from other vermin, since cats won't attack a swarm.  I may be completely off here, but it's something to consider.

EDIT: Oh, here's an extra bonus;  fire-resistant corpses (such as fire imps) will rot and produce miasma while in magma.  However, it will be restricted to the one tile the corpse is on, since miasma can't spread through magma.

EDIT: Ehh, scratch that.  Apparently, it can spread.   I've got a cloud above the vent opening.
