Yeah, I'm pretty good at thinking about it abstractly, doing it is harder.

Play some custom battles, on easy if you want.
Pick Romans.
Pause often and give orders while the game is paused.
You HAVE TO either memorize which way are all your units turned and positioned or watch over them at all times.

You get attack and / or morale bonuses for standing on a higher ground, having your flanks secured, attacking enemy flanks or back, charging, having general close to you.

You get attack and / or morale penalties for getting attacked on flanks or back, getting hit by fire attacks, facing elephants or dogs, having enemy outnumber you, exhaustion, losses, friendly units dying, friendly units routing, being encircled (not even attacked).

Morale bonuses / penalties decrease over time, thus the trick to chain routing an entire army is doing many of the above morale hits at once, to many different units.

Also pay attention to unit stats. Naked Fanatics are an attack-ONLY unit. Having them stand on line of scrimmage won't work. Trarii will get slaughtered by regular infantry. Bla.

Good luck  :o

I may do a more technical breakdown of a tough fight in the future. Preferably against Urban Cohorts.

You'll toss so much power at those factions that they'll go overboard and come down on you like an angry god with >10k stacks all over the place. Or is that your plan?

Yes

And then kill them all with one round shield cav?  ;)

(By the way, I don't think you ever posted the final kill-count from your solo cavalry extravaganza - it's not at the end of the video, nor is it in the update. I'm kind of interested in how many kills you managed to rack up before the semi-inevitable end!)

The "general" got killed the second They have hit the heavy infantry, and the entire unit routed. (i called BS on that, and left it as a cliffhanger instead of showing the ridiculous result)
The kill count was 450ish, death count was 35 or so.

You have to note, that Screaming Women have a stunning ONE defense (and 12 attack.. 19 on VH...), and any other cavalry would wipe the floor with them with no loses. They are a true definition of glass cannon.
Overall It wasn't really that good. All one needs to do is maneuver, and i screwed up anyway :S

Heh...

Was just playing as Brutii, and I've faced the same problems with idiotic AI. I've basically taken greece and a bit of Africa. Julii have the two island provinces and their starting ones, but nothing else.

I've stuck to mainly generals and equites armies, for the cavalry anti-morale bonus and for their epic winness.

Had a battle with Germania on a river.

Surrounded by german spearmen.

Attacked them while they were crossing, got an okay kill rate, killed their general, and all of a sudden their forces started to chain rout, and I got a massacre.

I was playing as the Julii and I made an army consisting of only equites, no general, and I had them attack the Gauls and they even took one city.  Each unit ( around 8 units or so, but as the battles went on, more and more of them kept dying ) had quite a good amount of experience, and they were pretty awesome.

I was finally doing some serious damage to Gaul, when the Spanish ( yes, the Spanish ) backstabbed me and besieged one of my less important conquered-gaul cities.  These filthy barbarians had a full stack of around a thousand units, mostly crappy infantry and some barbarian generals.  I thought, "I'm doomed", but I still sent my equite raider army over there.  There was only four units of town watch in that city, but it was good enough.  I fought the Spaniards ( with the town watch as reinforcements, but I didn't use them, they just hid in the forest ) with my equites.  I was outnumbered quite a bit, and none of my horse units were fully replenished.

I won.

I managed to systematically break the infantry, sort of like of "one at a time", and despite suffering quite a few losses, speed, stamina and maneuverability ( not to mention cavalry vs. infantry bonus ) won the day.  Stworca, thank you for the advice on "morale beats the game".  I wouldn't have won without knowing that.  Thank you.

And I just had a rebel diplomat come to me, offer a ceasefire, and I accepted. No more battles with them... Yay?

What I presume happened was some faction was destroyed with one of their diplomats in the field, who was set to rebels.

Hey guys, do you think there's a mod that lets you play as RTW rebels?  That would be cool.

Best way might be to update to 1.5 and change the desc_strat file.

Rebels are annoying to play as, they get can only recruit lesser units of whatever is the predominant culture of any specific city, they get killed off like crazy, lose armies like crazy, usually have little to no money, etc. The biggest advantages are A)you pop new armies, usually crap but rarely you get some good stuff B)It's unlikely you will lose ALL your cities, usually atleast the Amazon city will stay safe and C)You can keep Very High Taxes with no chance of rebellion

Nope, you can just go to the Descr_strat file that's buried in your Rome folder and make them playable with a cut+paste job.
