I'm pretty sure the AI just likes going straight for you when it disadvantages you most. I recall ragequitting once as Macedonia because the Brutii landed troops to take Corinth, having ignored everything else, at the same time as the Greeks pulled a full stack out of their arses, Thrace attacked me and my allies Dacia attacked me.

Have you tried Numidia? Even if you, somehow, manage to survive against your only neighbors, the Carthaginians, you are a scripted target for Rome and they'll wipe you out one hand tied behind.

IMHO the RTR is more balanced than the stock game (also by far more realistic), but if you need a challenge, yeah, any non-Egypt, Roman or German or Sarmation faction will do. 

Bactria in RTR is also fun, if you survive against the Seleuc Empire, you'll face all the factions that ate it, and it is the largest one, with 40 or so cities, in the beginning of the game. At least you get elephants...

Have you tried Numidia? Even if you, somehow, manage to survive against your only neighbors, the Carthaginians, you are a scripted target for Rome and they'll wipe you out one hand tied behind.

Yes, yes he has tried Numidia.

The end result was a 20-turn blitz that basically routed the entire world. So, no, Numidia is not challenging (at least for Stworca!).

Numidia was a "I have a unit of peasants? Send them to siege Rome" Blitz. I don't like playing this way, but Numidia was no let's play. It was just a short presentation of their units and possibilities. Numidia is still a far better faction than Spain in my opinion. Better cavalry, archers instead of slingers and defense-oriented infantry, not to mention their dirtcheat, reliable skirmisher cav.

I do like moving fast and always forward, aka. Armenia, but at the same time i like having a failsafe. My turtle strategy involves having a big, unbreakable wall around a heavily garrisoned city that can withstand nuclear blasts (Like Kotais in "FOOL" LP) and if i have a few such cities on the borders, i advance with no fear.

The problem with that as Spain is : We don't have neither stone walls NOR archers.. 
We can get both : Cretan Archers in Greece and Turkey, and walls by sieging a city that has them (Like.. Carthage!) but with Britons declaring war on us with 3000+ unit stacks, and everyone allying left and right it's not likely that we'll get either.

*Gasp* spoiler about Britain!? Well, yes, but what did you expect? 

Also : Despite losing thousands of soldiers for nothing, Gaul still has crushing number advantage over us..
As well as : Julii have 3 cities, yet they produce a full stack every few turns.

I may run a RTR or EB game in future, but now i have too many games on "To do" list.

Where were we? Ah yes, Scipii joining the funhouse!
If you're wondering whom would AI attack if i gave it a chance. I actually tested it, and tried falling back at this scene. What happened was : Carthage ignored Scipii, and attacked us.


Scipii field 4 hastati and a general. The crushing majority of our loses were our cavalry dying to their general.


I was building some towers, and.. What do you have in your basket, little girl? Medicine for your grandma?


Lucco (Jacob) sieges Lugdunum. The independent forces consist of : Crap. I autobattled it.


Back in Carthage, we see that They've sent a small force to stop us. Hmm.. the autobattle odds are quite surpri-- right. All-elephant group.


As usual, i have my mercenaries (foot and horse) take the damage, to spare our primary units.


..What? You wanted to see some battle? Ok, ok. Here's a random elephant slipping on a banana peel.


Now let us siege Carthage. It's stone walls are useless, with only a general inside.


..I see that they managed to get to me regardless. Touche, game, touche.


Unfortunately for Carthage, their army was poor. 2 slingers groups, some militia.. i mean, what did they expect to accomplish? Sparta is THAT way ->>
Then again, my numidian cav was wiped out by the slingers in melee.


Now if you excuse me, i have a gold bath to take.


We manage to get another ambush on the unwashed Frenchmen. It seems that They can make our best unit too, a bit too soon for my taste. Especially because for them it's mediocre, mid-tier one.


Still, we pulled off an ambush, which is quite an advantage. I never used them prior to this LP.


Is this all you can throw at me, game? Gaul are going to die eventually, so will Carthage, and R---

The weather was sunny, the hour still early, the food was great... And Britain dished out 3000 units on my scouts, with the game disabling the withdraw button. Notice, how they have 300 something chariots, and everyone has at least 3 experience bars... My forces pull off heroic victory after another, and most don't even have 1. Yet the "Never fought ANYONE" Britain has an army of battle hardened veterans... Needless to say, we're going to die here.


We corner up (except for that one unit of Scutarii, our infantry is better only than their peasants. Spanish Mercs, while nice, have proven to rout without being touched.


Enemy has 3 generals, i want at least one of them dead! Thus we charge..


Victory in this small skirmish was certain, but..... i love you too, game.


After some crazy maneuvering and taunting, we manage to kill their MAIN general, who also happens to be their king.


We rout people left...


We rout people right..


We rout people in the center...


..and then our general dies, charging druids..


..and things go to hell from there. (no screenshots, i was too frustrated to take any afterwards)
Also, we get hit by some rock solid math. Sure, SOME casualties are healable, but.. just no. That's a low blow, even on VH.


The fact that Britain has built up just to attack us.. No retreat option despite being in the open.. General escaping.. General dying on 11 wavering druids.. and then British necromancy..
This means war.

Surprisingly, overall rating is where we shine. Numero uno, topping even Egypt. I guess it may explain some hostility.


Military wise, Gaul, Britain, Julii and Carthage don't appear to be doing that well. I guess They are indeed throwing everything they have at us.


Territory shouldn't surprise anyone. We have more useless, sandy provinces than anyone else in the world!


Financially we're not in top 5, and.. What the balls, Brutii?!


All these graphs.. I wonder when did you notice that new Scipii ship next to Carthage? (you DID notice it, right?). QUite a force they have there, could deal some considerable damage to our land force in Carthage..


..but we have naval superiority.. Armies sunk : 2.


With this being on the bottom of the sea, let's secure the region known as Armorica.


Frenchmen didn't bring 3000 units to the field, so They are worth only one combat screenshot.


..all right, the results one too.


This city has almost no value, except for a better front against our new enemy, Britons.


..but what is this.. A change of fate?! Yes, yes i will take them. Up to this point our strongest defensive unit were Scutarii (Aka "Almost Hastati")


We also catch Numidia with their army outside (They are heading for one of our cities, somewhere.. who cares about Numidia anyway..)


We send some reinforcements from Iberian Peninsula. Including puppies.


We set up another ambu-- what is this..? Have i bribed a Roman general to join us? Hell yeah. Two in fact.


Britons siege Lugdunum, but by the time They get there, we're ready.


It is on.

How did the Carthaginian force catch up to you at the city?

In any event, you're now much better off than my last attempt at Spain. I expect your ranking is due in no small part to the sacking of Carthage.

Yeah, the fact that your only defeat was against an enemy with 4 time as much troops and better one at that, and that you still manage to kill twice as many men as you lost make your whole claim this is the hardest game of RTW ever a bit ridiculous. Still, awesome update. I wonder how you'll manage to siege full-stack, rock-wall Roman cities.

It's because it's not a roleplaying LP. Armenia was taking a long time, because i had to come up with some pathetic "humor" attempts, that ultimately failed, insulted everyone and left a bad taste in my mouth (like when i was in prison, the bad taste didn't go away)

You're doing good!

It's all about shock power breaking enemy morale. If you have 3 inf and 1 cav, and the enemy attacks you with 10 inf and 3 cav, you can still cause a chain rout.
Naked fanatics are a curious unit. 13 attack, 7 defense (7..) warcry, bonus in snow, bonus in woods, charge bonus.

Charging two of these (after warcry) on both flanks of a unit, ANY unit, will break it. But should the combat drag on, the low defense will cause your force to be wiped out. Against the AI it is possible to turn any 2v2 into 2 2v1's, giving a fighting chance.
Bull warriors are even more of a curious unit. Their javelin throw has 17 base attack. Not one archer band has that much. (The British head hurlers do, i believe) But their other stats fit hastati more than an elite unit. Except for the god morale that is.

Time for our Caralis half-a-stack to do something, don't you think, viewers?
