Music Creation Programs?
« on: July 12, 2011, 08:24:29 pm »

Feeling musically inspired, and not wanting to waste this mood, I've been looking around for a program that would allow me to create basic songs to amuse myself with. My Google-fu being weak, I've been unable to come up with a program that meets all of my needs.
  • The program should have a bunch of built-in instruments for me to play around with. I shouldn't be recording anything.
  • Fairly simple to use and learn.
  • For Windows and completely free.
The criteria are (very) flexible, I think. I'm looking for something simple to use and learn, as I have no idea how long this mood will last. Any suggestions for a program I could use?

Your criteria aren't quite as flexible as you think, as a fair portion of the better virtual MIDI synthesizers/VST&AU hosts are paid software. Regardless, the only really good one I know that matches what you're looking for is LMMS.

Better version.

Obviously limited compared to LMMS (you can do the same thing in LMMS with mario sounds and such) but it is much simpler and easier to learn. Plus very fun!

Music production hobbyist here. As far as programs go, I recommend Ableton Live. But you're looking for something free, and the cheapest version of Live is $100, sooo....

Hey, there's always chiptunes!

How about Mixcraft.

It's basically GarageBand for Windows.

How ironic that I was just looking for a thread like this.

There's also pxtone, which is used by a lot of indie game developers.
It was made by Pixel.
User manual.

Just started playing with this, and it's a lot of fun.  It seems kinda limited (inability to change tempo during a track for instance), but with one read of the manual, it's practically idiotproof.
