The voyage has been long and hard, but it has finally come to an end. On the horizon ahead of you lies the outline of rocky outcroppings, beaches and forests. You have finally reached your destination. You have said goodbye to everyone and everything in your homeland, you are unlikely to ever return. This is your new home.

Archipelago: Colonization

This is a game of exploration, colonization and survival on a chain of islands in a fantasy setting. I am mostly making up the rules as I go along. Yes, I was mostly inspired by reading some of the other threads here like Outpost.

You get to guide the foundation of this colony by voting for the actions taken by the colonists each month. The first 4 people who want to participate may create a boats captain. This captain has the sailor labor, and up to 2 additional labors or special considerations. Captains have a certain degree of plot immunity, the only way they can die in the first two years is if they starve to death or do something really self destructive. If a captains creator asks that he do something, he will do it even if the rest of the players vote for something else. If you choose not to guide your captain, I will make something up.

Each turn is 1 month long. I will try to run 1 turn a day. Anyone may vote on how the colony is to proceed.

Captain Rahotep was the first Ra-man to disembark from his galley, the 'Pride of Thoth', landing on the shores of a new land. Frankly, he was glad that any of them had made it. His people had experience building and sailing papyrus rafts up the river, not these monstrous seabound galleys. Storms had taken some, opportunistic sea raiders others. But, they had arrived.

In the holds of his surviving ships, there were settlers-chosen for strong faith and able work sill, along with seeds for growing crops, and with tools and knowledge for building a new colony for the Dynasty.

Rahotep did not allow himself to be bitter. After all, he has served the Pharaoh on the battlefields faithfully, and allowing himself to be caught with that chambermaid in the sacred place was a grave sin. Instead of execution, the Pharoah had in his mercy, spared them both and sent them on this grand journey. It was good to finally be away from all that palace scheming, anyway, and no longer having to hide his love.

Others were disembarking now. They seemed afraid of the new land-these people were farmers, archithects and scholars-not soldiers, not nearly. But he felt they would do well, if given a chance to build in memory of their homeland, and be prepared to defend it.

Captain Thamos, The captain of the 'Isis' Glory', a builder who got send off due to an unfortunate building accident, Placed under the command of Rahotep. He wants to build the finest cities, the most glorious monuments on these islands- Wait, Islands?!

...Well, crap. This is a size limiter. Better buid MORE land then.

I hadn't thought of it before now, and guess I didn't specify. I was planning for a single culture community, with the votes cast and then people picking out captains if they want. I wouldn't know how to make it work any other way.

So assuming that people vote for Ra-men, your captain is a-ok. Or I need to figure out how to combine dramatically different cultures...

Did you want us to edit the culture votes in?

And you could have everyone get blown off course or everyone heading to the same islands.

You don't need to edit your votes in, but you can if you want to. 2 for Ra-men I am assuming?

As for different cultures? I would probably have to run them as separate colonies simply because they clash.

Make that three votes. A priest should come along, to ensure that the people don't lose the favor of the gods.

Unless I get a whole lot more votes for something else, I am going to make plans for running with the Ra-men.

Alternatecash, if you want, you could designate your captain as a priest. Otherwise, it will have to wait until a temple is built.

The culture is polytheistic but a priest typically dedicates himself to one god and for simplicity sake they are as follows (fire, water, air, earth, life, death). Don't expect miracles just yet, but they may show up eventually.

I would like to get at least one more person interested, but I will do the update sometime tonight.

Oh yes. Setos, a "humble" priest dedicated to the god of Death. Obviously, funeral rites are going to be a priority.

Climate:
The air in the early spring here is as cold as the the highlands of your home country on the clearest and driest night. From what you have heard the winters are worse, but thankfully short. You can expect 3 to 5 months of the year to present a challenge to the health and morale of your people. Despite this, you can expect a growing season 8 to 9 months of the year.

Local area:
As your ships approached their final destination you had passed a small desert island surrounded by reefs and shoals. It would have been risky to approach with a fully loaded ship of this size but appeared to offer excellent fishing opportunities. Nearby you have also spotted a mass of kelp and a deep hole that likely houses large schools of fish.

The ships are run aground in the middle of a beach in a calm and protected cove.

The ships are undamaged but are high enough to require significant effort and a high tide to unseat them.

To your immediate east is a moderate sized stream whose more direct path to the sea has been blocked by the dunes and hills farther to the east. The stream is to shallow for your your ships to navigate for any distance. With sufficient effort, the hills can yeald enough flint to produce a few primative stone tools, but not enough to warrant a quarry.

To your southwest along the coastline is a brackish marsh consisting mostly of matted reeds.

To your west is a sparse hardwood forest.

To your north and northeast along the stream appears to be a firtile flood plain bordered by slightly drier prairy.

For now the ships and meeting tent can provide the bare minimum of shelter needed. However, people are eager to stretch their legs and lay down roots in this new land, and the beach is hardly an ideal location for construction.


Notes:
Rule change: 10 buildings per tile is not enough, I'm going to up that to 20.

There is still a "slot" open for anyone that wants to put in a character.

I say we head to the northeast, Plenty of food to be grown there and a fresh water source would be useful.

I have the map up now. Feel free to direct construction, scouting and harvesting.

Scouts can move farther afield than other colonists and take less risks while scouting.
Your carpenters can build wooden structure well.
guards guard well.
The sailors are slightly less useful on land than other colonists, but are going to be needed if ships or canoes are used for exploring/fishing.
