Should PE stay in school programs?
« on: July 12, 2011, 12:51:58 pm »

It is pretty pointless when it comes to intellectuality and the world has evolved into a place where now most of the jobs require intelligence. Not to mention that 95% of male PE teachers are total imbeciles, not even worth coach material.

For example I would like to finish with a silver medal, but with the current PE teacher it is a gamble. I am a pretty sporty dude, I have 5s(As) and I play an instrument, also have been to math and English and IT olympics and ranked high. I do everything the dude wants me to and I still always get 3s(1 is the lowest grade, 5 is highest). Same with my friend, but he is more sporty. Also takes part in olympics, plays an instrument and all 5s. He can do even more than I can and still gets the same grades in PE as I get. Then there are the brainless dudes who get 2s(Fs) in everything that needs intelligence, show up in PE once every week and even then don't do anything. They get 5s.

The guy also keeps a notebook in his front jacket pocket where he puts your grades. If you would like to know your grades you need to speak to the guy for 5 minutes before he understands that you can view grades in that ugly little brown notebook.

OR, PE should be not gradable, because PE grading is strongly subjective, it has no standards.

Alright, discuss.

Well, there's some qualities that can be graded in PE. Like teamwork. Of course, the importance of this quality is debatable.

It does seem pointless when it's compulsory, otherwise I've no problems with it.

Also I forgot to mention, he thinks that intellectuals and universities are pointless.

This dude seriously grinds my gears and I hope he burns in hell.

I don't know about your country, but since America seems to be intent on raising the world's first self-basting generation...yes, I'm in favor of retaining PE. At least they'll get SOME exercise that way.

The problem here, it should be noted, is of course the teacher in question. Have somebody sue his arse off and get him sacked.

TL;DR version.

Do we still need PE? The world has evolved to where brains are more important. Also 95% of gym teachers are stupid. Here is an actedote to support my claim gym teachers are stupid.

Response to TL;DR version.

Yes, no it hasn't, actually prove that, cry in life advice.

Doesn't mean you can't. That person is obviously abusing his position, so I don't see why not.

Except rather than having programmes that hurt the self esteem of some we should focus on programmes that teach people basic tools on how to take care of their body and literally not die of fatness or fat related illnesses.

Early heart disease, killing 1000X more times the Americans than Terrorists since forever.

I think having compulsory PE up to a certain age is good for the population.

Because then we might end up with one of the guys who screams at you that you are meaningless no matter what you do. One of the schools here has it, he also works the students to death.

Kael,

Hmm if so, then it should stop when you enter high school, like carpentry stops.

Nikov,

Hmm this is hard where most of the class gets 3s. Even the ones who win a lot of competitions.

Clearly the US needs to invade Cholesterolstan. It has weapons of mass fattening!

Also, there should be a choice on whether or not to take it.

No, I rather think that PE should be compulsory like Health and basic Home Economics - like how to write checks, manage credit, your bank account, and not fail at basic aspects of life.

There are far too many people who fail at basic hygiene of their bodies and basic stuff like not getting $10k+ in unnecessary credit card debt.

Well, we've got a pretty interesting system in the UK where basically everything is required for the first three years, then you can drop quite a few subjects. Of course this system would work better if they didn't randomly start making subjects compulsary, at this rate there's going to be only two classes you can drop.

Yes, PE should be compulsory for all ages. I've had very good and very bad experiences with PE teachers over the years, and the fact is that they're no different from other teachers when it comes to quality variation. I took PE in Elementary School because it was compulsory and loved it most of the time, it wasn't offered at all by my Middle School, and I've taken it every year in High School so far, even though only two of those were compulsory. I'm not taking it for my Senior year because I ran out of PE classes that sounded worthwhile that I haven't already taken.

Yes, being able to perform well in PE is very subjective, and as such grading should be based upon participation, like in my school. There was a "thug life"-type guy in my PE class last year. He was probably the most fit out of all of us, but he almost certainly got the lowest grade because of how little he participated. I was probably in the lowest bracket of fitness in the class, but I showed up every day, dressed out, and participated, so I ended up with over a 95% average. That's a good system in my mind.

Also, they need to make you learn to swim in elementary PE if you don't have a disability preventing it. Seriously, the number of people who can't swim in my High School class is pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. At least 60% of them would drown almost instantly in seven or eight feet of water, and that's just sad. It's like they want to die via drowning.
