long time since ive played 40d, but if i remember right you could get hunters to use any weapon, such as axes ect, so you dont have to waste ammo

I'm pretty sure 40d had some utility which allowed you to heal all injuries.
Hell if I remember what it was called though.

Healing Utility.

1) Save and exit (the program).
2) Change the creature race's body plan in the raws (creature_standard.txt, I think); i. e., remove the "NOSE" entry.
3) Restart and load.
4) ? ? ? ?
5) Profit!

Get your people out of the fortress guard before they get any good at anything, otherwise you're stuck with them being useless. The economy happens, so watch out for that. Nobles actually immigrate as well. War hammers are perfectly capable of sending enemies flying the entire width of the map if you have a decent hammerdwarf wielding them. They also explode in quite a pretty fashion once they run out of air.

Train wrestlers first until they become really good dodgers.
Then turn them into hammerlords.
Then watch as enemies fly into trees and blow up.

There are 2 important things about 40d:

(1) You want an embark with stuff in it.  Change the init to show the various features in the embark window and look for a place with the features you want.  I can dig up some specific worldgen changes, if you have trouble finding an embark with enough of them.

(3) Instakill criticals suck.  Watch out for enemy crossbows and train shields as much as you can.

Back then you could heal wounds with Dwarf Companion.

If you are looking into going back into 40d, then I recommend DWARF HEAVEN

Don't know if it has already been mentioned but it is a MUST for 40d.

Underground rive,
Volcano,
Bottomless Pit
LOT of flux and Iron.
And of course HFS all in ONE small map location!

Dorf heaven = win.

Don't bother healing wounds. Just lock the buggers in, and replace from migrants.

Noble traps are a necessity.

As are elf drowners.

Once you have 30+ legendary wrestler/weapon dwarves, sieges and megabeasts are pushovers. Your only problem is arrows.

!!SPOILERS!! lead to epic !!FUN!!.

The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Oh, and crossbows are weapons of mass destruction. Seriously, they're like machine guns of instant death, capable of taking BOTH eyes of an attacker out with a single shot (strike directions weren't in 40d).
