you could hash your role name say 'townie' and 'roleclaim' 99e8e630bbaedda96eaca19e08d0b397

then if you later claim 'townie' everyone can go check to see if your first claim was accurate.

Its not a huge deal in beginner mafia, but suppose we're playing BYOR. On day 1 we pressure everyone to mass claims the hash of their role.

Then at lylo we all claim our real roles. Scum thus have to craft their fakeclaim at day 1 and pretend to play accordingly which gives town a huge advantage.

Unless they're really good at Birthday attacks and come up with alt claims in advance.

It's still a lame thing to do and I would crack down on it in any game I modded.

Indeed.

I'd be fine with it if it made sense flavor-wise; for example, a version of the current Terminator game with unknown role names would be a place that it would make sense. On the other hand, it would be entirely out of character and ruin the feel of the game if it was in something like a Paranormal game.

Also, it would not work in any game with known roles. However, you might be able to apply other cryptographic methods to communicate secretly in general posts... Right, I should probably stop giving people ideas.

BM XLV needs a replacement. If you wanted to get in mafia, now is a perfect time.

RE: cryptography— From a search of the subforum, this rule seemed to have been introduced by Lordnincompoop in a game that didn't end being run. No one appears to have ever done this here, but it does seem like a potentially game breaking strategy.

On the other hand, I think breadcrumbing your role as a hidden message in your early posts is legitimate play strategy if you intend to claim a power role later on.

I don't see an issue with it, since a sufficiently clever scum player can breadcrumb multiple roles.

Didn't help him win though. I wonder where Captain Ford disappeared off to.

It might be entertaining to see a game where things like that are encouraged - people can use whatever tactics that they want to win. PMs might be restricted in the form of the mod needing copies and only allowing them to be sent to living people in the game.
