Deer N/A - what is it?
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:00:19 pm »

As the title (more or less) says, I have managed to retrieve some deer n/a.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The humans brought it with them in a caravan, and I started wondering, what is this?

Some people here may know of Liquid, I thought maybe this is something similar. I have bought the barrel to see what it is.

If anyone has ideas, or something else related, please, tell me.

well i think its clear to everyone that this is not a bug and toady intended this to happen.

presumably an enum went 1 too high and doesnt crash the game thanks to error handling.

Similar to DNA, Deer N/A are the building blocks of deer.

Bug - game created unknown item with some known parameters (like that it is... deer-y). Game does not know what it is and write n/a in description.

'n/a' shows up as the description of the liquid state of various material types (skin, nail, hair, eye, meat, etc) that aren't normally ever encountered in liquid state.  So, somehow the humans are bringing you barrels of molten deer.  Did they come from a city built out of magma or something?

This happens all the time if you've gotten duped raws somehow.

presumably an enum went 1 too high and doesnt crash the game thanks to error handling.

I've always wondered about this. What kind of error handling would allow you to get nonsense things from data that isn't meant to be used that way? Like Missingno in Pokemon. How would you code the ability to do that into your program.

So far I like sphalerites idea the most.

I will still test it, see what it does, how it reacts etc.

Spill on some elves and find out what happens, like what has been done with gnomeblight.

Usually it is not deliberately coded. In these cases, code is just sufficiently robust to survive unexpected values (with bit of luck). Presence of nonsense data itself indicates weak or nonexistant error handling. Writing "n/a" is some kind of error handling.

n/a isn't in the string dump. The only place it is found is the raws themselves.

"Deer N/A" .... They're trying to sneak non-alcoholic booze into the fort!

Slay them; slay them all.

Well, it is Deer N/A, so is it actually molten non-drunkard deer?

No, literacy just isn't up to par in that civ. Can't expect 'em to get all the words right — all those similar squiggles .... and so little paper to learn on.
