What is going on here? O.o It's like everyone took this posts point and derailed it into a house full of mathematical theorists. And I'm not talking about the good ones.

I always thought the speed of DF was measured in DWS, or Dwarf Walks per Second. I usually maintain a good 10 DWS, maybe at 2o years it'll drop down to 8 DWS. On my poor laptop it starts off at 8 DWS if there is a river, and slowly drops down to 3 DWS until the goblin corpses start piling up. After that it's 1/10 DWS if I stay with it, usually I kill everything when it reaches 1 DWS.

I thought I'd just jump in there and be confusing like everyone else, or should I?
10 DWS is equal to 110FPS, you realize?

Actually, it's 100 FPS, if the dwarf hasn't any agility bonuses.

a typical healthy dwarf takes one step every ten frames.

You said that 100fps is "70% slower" than 30fps . . .

Nobody said that.

Quote time.

100FPS is 333% faster than 30FPS, BUT THE INVERSE IS NOT TRUE. It's only 70% slower (this is already mentioned in the last post.

I understand he probably just flipped the antecedents around, though, resulting in confusing language. No big deal.

It's nasty, the ambiguous use of fast/slow to mean the same thing...

Racecar A is moving at 100km/h
Racecar B is moving at 200km/h

1. Racecar B is twice as fast as Racecar A.
2. Racecar A is half as fast as Racecar B.

And for some reason "Racecar A is half as slow as Racecar B" is supposed to mean the same as the sentence 2...

Take SPF, seconds per frame. That should be a measure of slowness (and yes, it is the reciprocal of the speed).

More mathematically speaking, speed is measured in m/s, which doesn't have anything to do with DF (aside from the average human moving at ~0.004m/s). The term we need here is frequency, measured in Hz = s-1. So if frequency is doubled, then there is a 100% increase in frequency. Slowness, on the other hand, can be measured with the reciprocal of speed, therefore seconds or time.

You have damn slow humans where you come from, that's 0.009mph (0.014 kph). And technically, the reciprocal of speed should be seconds per metre.

Except the AVERAGE dwarf has a - to agility. See the wiki, as I did considerable testing on this subject. The quote you mentioned is WRONG.

I wouldn't call it wrong so much as outdated. That quote originates from long before dwarves had an agility penalty.

The quote is from 2 days ago. No version of DF was released between that time and now.

He means the idea related by the quote is outdated, representing an earlier rule-of-thumb that no longer applies.

Actually 1500 is the average, the - is just to signify that dwarves are less agile then other creatures. Removing it or replacing it with a + won't effect the game at all. It's the numbers that do the talking.

Err, 900 is the average. That corresponds to exactly 1.1111... as it is a simple multiplier. I do know attributes due to me testing them to contribute to the wiki pages.

dree12 is right. The multiple values simply represent different ranges, that way you can alter the minimum, maximum, average, and distribution between them.

It's not the average, it's the median, but that's simply conventions. There is a difference though.

I'm amazed by how correct this is.

And this has officially become the dwarf speed argument thread, due to the wording in my simple comment. Enjoy, gents!
