tame elephants still rampage

1 - catch elephant in cage trap
2 - haul caged elephant to animal stockpile
3 - tame elephant
4 - slaughter elephant
5 - elephant randomly escapes while being led to the butcher workshop.

this is where the fun starts.  the tamed elephant can now avoid all the traps in the fortress, but it can also still attack and kill every dwarf that it wanders by.

i have sucessfully tamed elephants in the past, and they have been benign upon release.  im guessing this has something to do with the animal escaping during hauling to the slaughterhouse, or possibly because i never re-built the cage and just tamed and interacted with it directly from the animal stockpile.

its recreatable in the save i have, happens with every elephant that the above 5 steps apply to.

Dwarves still seem to think that some "tame" animals are hostile, and they get tagged as that, but they are still, in the game's perception, tamed, and immune to traps and the like.

Are they named elephants, that have already feasted upon dwarven flesh and blood?

its happened with both named and un-named alike.

i think they must know that they're being taken to the slaughter, and they fight tooth and tusk for vengence against their dwarf captors.

I think I remember a similar issue from before.  Tamed creatures are normally not viewed as hostile, but if it ever killed (or maybe even injured?) a dwarf before being tamed, the dwarves will remember it and hold a grudge.  Therefore I think what you are seeing is the dwarves attacking the elephant and the elephant fighting back, not the other way around.

Is the elephant named?  IIRC animals only get named when they kill dwarves (or are pets).

I've had a named elephant and her offspring going rogue (Boatmurdered). Basically every dwarf that saw it got interrupted, and a few dogs were trampled. Didn't seem to happen with any of the others.

The solution is to use your military, and make sure they'll attack dangerous animals.

Most of my fortresses have elephants. The funny thing is, they don't ever mess with me. I tried to capture some but they have no interest in being near me. One dwarf got a broken leg while running by one and that was the worst of it. I swear they remember if you EVER piss them off and slowly start messing with you afterwards. Maybe they take offense if their family gets taken by cages. I suppose this is another very positive aspect of a closed source game; the mystery!

Boatmurdered is an exception. Boatmurdered was cursed. And also the best read I've had in years.
