[38a] Weird squad name.
« on: February 11, 2008, 06:52:00 pm »

This is utterly, stupidly, laughably minor, but it still looks like a bug. Just check out the photo. Specifically, the squad name.

Any thoughts?

Hrm, the squad name has two dwarven parts though.  I wonder if Ase:n doesn't have a translation or if it is in an adjective slot without a word to modify (in which case it might not print).

Okay, ase:n means "gravel" which doesn't have the plural "gravels" in the dictionary.  On the other hand, squad names try to force plurals a little too hard, even if a noun has no plural entry, and that was making it blank.  As a side note, I suppose I could add a plural entry for gravel, but although google shows it used quite a bit, I've never heard it used, at least by a non-landscaper or something.

I don't see why the name generator should force plurals on squad names at all...  For instance, "The cage of death" sounds a lot more fitting on a squad name than "The cages of death", the latter suggesting that the soldiers themselves are "cages", rather than the overall squad being one giant deathtrap.

Just a personal opinion.

On the other hand, words like "smasher" only work as singulars for individual units, but are much better as forced plurals for squads.  I don't really have a lot of extra flags for words, but this would be a case where it could use additional information.

One of my best squads of marksdwarves was simply known as "Of Gifting."  It never occurred to me to report it as a bug.   :p

I think I can make an argument to the contrary.
"The Smasher of Goblins" would be a hammer.
"The Rock of Death" is an anvil.

Even as squads of 10 their function is the same.  One group of damage takers to smash goblins against as the hammer comes from the other side.

Toady, the noun "gravel" does not have a plural. I think that the generator should check to see if the word it's making plural has a plural. Problem solved.

pengiun, well, yeah, that's the cause of the bug and it has been fixed.  It seems we've moved on to more of a suggestion discussion now.
