The thing with movies nowadays is that, inevitably, the characters own brand new expensive versions of whatever thing it is. In such a way manufacturers are able to decide what is "cool" for us. Thus the well dressed yet casual american inevitably has American Eagle, Hollister or Abercrombie proudly stitched onto it's chest as paying the company more so the company can advertise itself is apparently the clever thing to do and makes you a more viable person. Obviously the clothes make the man, like the cover makes the book.

I'd imagine a similar thing happens in movies where people who make clothing designed for sleeping in decided that people should think that they need to wear clothes to sleep.

I sleep with what i wear during the day. Shirt, pants, and underpants. If it's cold, i wear a jumper and maybe even socks.

I go nude.

And then I wrap the bed around me for decency while I get my dressing gown on, and a pair of PJ bottoms.

Don't you have a door to close for decency?

Running someone through with a sword is quite illegal, yet in self defense it is not prosecuted.
Yeah, but the point is about the legality of illegally making the weapon.  You can't really make an illegal taser in self defence (barring some very strange situations).  Even if they decide that your self defence with the super dangerous weapon was justified, that wouldn't change whether making that weapon in the first place was.

My town had a real problem with break-ins 10 years ago or so. In response, a city ordinance proclaimed that you could use any nonlethal method to drive out an intruder. You could also threaten/use lethal force if the intruder threatens/uses lethal force. This glove hurts quite a bit, but it is by no means lethal.

Did I mention that break-ins have fallen almost 80% since then?

If you go too far in non-lethal self-defence, the advice given to me is to claim they said they had a knife or gun. Dunno if it'll work in America but that's the advice an English Cop who also teaches a self-defence course gave me ^^

Yeah I think discussing ways of breaking the law and perverting the course of justice after the fact probably isn't what Toady wants here.

Well, the funny thing about our justice system is that it's a lot more fluid to interpretations than "This is right and this is wrong".

Anyone who says otherwise has clearly not served out their jury duty or been in court :V

All I'm saying is just because something is "illegal" doesn't mean that you will auto-magically be slapped with fines if you are discovered with it. The law must be interpreted and the context studied. In many cases with "illegal weapons", the personal ownership of them and protection of self and one's family has often gone without prosecution, as the ownership law tends to only affect taking them out in public and their usage on other people for assault purposes.

Much of the US tends to pride itself on the whole "we do what we want in our own home" in regards to weaponry since the 2nd Amendment.

I usually wear pyjama bottoms, unless it's winter, in which case I might actually also wear the top aswell. In the peak of summer, I might sleep in underwear. Oh, and I'm English.

Well, I tried the sleeping naked thing for a couple of nights on the advice of the thread. Sweet jegus, I haven't slept that well in years (Although, to be fair, I've had sleeping problems since the day I was born). I guess it's good advice after all.
