I think the movies show people wearing pajamas more often than they do in reality.  It lets the movies avoid nudity.

But then the movies affect the way actual people live-- and so, yeah, lots of Americans do wear pajamas.  Not all though.
This is what I figured but I have wondered if it's a strong protestant anti-nudity thing.

Brit here: I overheat easily so I sleep nude or with some boxers on. I can just throw the covers off if I wake up too hot and cool quickly. I used to wear a t-shirt but after some time without I find it hard to sleep with one on. Oh and I've also fallen to sleep fully dressed on multiple occasions, usually followed by me waking up hot and flustered, and often do when camping for some reason, though, not last time; far too hot.

it's different in every country. i've never seen  anyone in england or australia wearing full-on traditional pjs, but a lot of people wear shorts, or nothing.

Gamerlord: I've seen people in the UK with pyjamas on before when I was little and on sleepovers, it was strange enough to be notable, though. My Nan got some for me and my brother when we first stayed at hers for the summer but we couldn't sleep in them. As for adults I can only think of one and he's fictional and called Arthur Dent.

Underwear. I've never understood why anyone would want to wear anything more. I'd go completely naked too were I a free-er spirit. ;)
I'm a free spirit. But I'm an European - the liberal, libertine scum of Earth.
This is now officially the "What do you wear when you sleep" thread.
I'm European too, a Swede, in fact. But we're mostly only garmently liberated for tourist-catching purposes. We lure them here with promises of beautiful busty young blondes, and then when they get to our rocky, moon-lit summer beaches they're all "where are the naked wimmins?" and then we capture them and force them work in our iron mines for the rest of their lives.
...Or maybe not.

I had a pyjamas when I was a younger kid as well. I think it's pretty common to have when you're a child.

We had to wear pyjamas while napping in kindergarten, I hated napping.

Northern New England sees a bit of temperature variation.
This time of year, never more than boxers. Wintertime, once we're back to depending on wood fires for heat, I'll be wearing sweatpants and/or long-johns, a fleece hoodie, socks, flannel sheets, three to five blankets, and a cat. Possibly two.

Add a bow-tie to that and you'll be set. Creepy, but set.

I honestly dunno why anyone uses actual pyjamas. I like to repurpose old cloths for that myself. As for actually wearing them it depends on what the temperature feels like.

Very hot: Naked

Hot: Underwear

Average: Blue jeans cut into shorts, Badly damaged loose fitting cotton T-shirts.

Cold: Badly damaged jeans, old longsleeve shirts.

Freezing: Same as above but with some well worn socks thrown in.

This all works fine for me, the only problem is I look ridiculous in jean shorts  :D.

There is of course the potential of just sleeping naked, but it almost never gets hot enough in North Carolina to warrant that.

I'd have to disagree on that. Actually, it's always hot enough if you just pile a few quilts on the bed. I'm commando most of the time, but when it gets really cold in the winter, I have a one-piece footy pajama suit. Yes, like what little kids wear. It's bright red and it's awesome.

Underwear or whatever I happen to be wearing when I know the clothes ain't 'that' dirty... at least in bed.

I tend to be more wear whatever I got on when not at home.
