Normally I either sleep in the nude or in whatever I was wearing when I passed out from exhaustion or, erm-

OTOH, I do have a pair of pyjama pants that I wear around the house during the summer and winter breaks when I don't have classes or work that day, but that is just because I'm lazy. I tend to agree with some of the above posters that it tends to be portrayed as much more prevalent because of the nudity taboo and the implications of that on Hollywood and television producers.

It is pretty silly to see grown men in full pyjamas in movies.

I can completely relate to wearing pyjamas while you're up and awake - I get into my comfy clothes as soon as I get can, jeans and old t-shirts mostly, but much linen pants and shirts during the summer heat. And never ever socks. Doesn't matter if it's below zero outside. Socks are all made of the devil's butthair.

However, comfy clothes are comfy. There's not way around that. It's the most truth.

This is like the third thread this week that starts with, "I heard Americans do this thing that I don't, why is that?"  It wouldn't be quite so weird if they weren't utterly mundane things that I know for a fact aren't exclusive to Americans anyway.

And for the record, I have never met anyone who wears dedicated pajamas.
To be fair, it stopped being another "why does Americans not say goodbye before hanging up" threads the moment people started talking about what they wear. But yeah, I feel your pain. It's all very ridiculous. It's not like you're some kind of completely alien species or even culture.

...I'd never really thought about how f**ked up my sleeping arrangements are until now.  :-\
You're not alone, this is how I've slept since I can remember, including the fan (though that's mostly for some noise). Actually, I can top it - I have to wear earplugs too, or random-ass noises like cars going by will wake me up.

Working nights has forced me into using earplugs. It's a good thing I'm not paranoid otherwise not being able to hear people come into the room might freak me out. Not that it doesn't have other disadvantages.

Hmm... I always wear at least a t-shirt to bed.  Usually a pair of sweatpants/pajama bottoms with that, or I go with a nightgown, and sometimes whatever you call those flimsy silky things I like to wear with a hooded sweatshirt over.  Nightshirts?  Ladies' undershirts?  I don't even know.

I like being dressed in case of fire, attempted breakin (should really go back to keeping my sword right next to my bed, because I am paranoid), or desire to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night without the resident physicist getting an eyeful.

I one night thought of getting a baseball bat or something next to my bed, incase of break in.

It's rarely cold enough here to warrent sleeping in pjs or really anything. So most times it is just a t-shirt to bed for me, and most times I end up kicking the bedsheets off at night. I do keep some mace in the bedstand drawer and an old broken broomstick handle under the bed, in case of break-in. Biggest deterrant for that though is an armed alarm system (can't count how many times I've heard of people who had an alarm but never turned them on at night... *shrugs*) and locking the house up.

I actually still sleep with a knife within reach of my bed, but that wasn't about break-ins.  The shotgun on the wall above my bed is for break-ins, with the caveat that I have exactly one shell in the house, and it's probably a dud.

Doesn't even occur to me to dress as if I might have to get up and run, although my sweatpants are never farther than next to the bed.

If I had to get up and run, clothing would be of little concern to me. Really.

If I were undressed and I had to leave, don't get me wrong--I'd leave immediately.

I'd just rather be pre-dressed.  But that's really fundamentally more about the roommate than anything else.

Boxers or nothing.  I toss and turn so much, shirts and pants end up badly twisted around my arms and legs and cut off circulation.  I've woken up with both arms asleep before and couldn't sit up for a full minute because of the dead weight.  Heck, even my boxers end up badly twisted, so I'll go without some nights.

When I was a kid I sometimes woke up with both my legs so asleep, I couldn't even move and I usually had to really really take a leak, it was a horrible experience.

I cannot sleep in the nude though, I really hate the feeling of sheets on my skin. I can see a market for people who want to sleep with lighter clothes on but dislike skin sheet contact.
And that, children, is how snuggies were born.
