And for a defensive weapon, decent tazers are expensive as hell. I mean, damn, decent handguns and shotguns are cheaper.
Rubber gloves, a soldering kit, and a few disposable cameras make things a fair bit cheaper.  ;D

I'm sure the safety of this is top-notch, right.

Yeah, this sounds the opposite of legit.

Speaking of which, are there regulations on the construction of such weaponry, or ownership? I'm honestly pretty curious about that, and would rather not take it for granted that any old guy can craft any legal-to-own weaponry in his basement and use it for self-defense. For certain types of weapons, there might well be regulations in different areas, but I'm not a lawyer.

Yes, depending on where you are. Can it actually stop you if it's for self defense? Well, in the rare occasion that you may need to use an illegal weapon to protect yourself, I've heard of court battles going both ways (usually guns though).

In particular I recall the story of a college kid who stabbed an intruder of his apartment with a katana. No charges were ever pressed against the kid.

That's an apartment intruder, though, and the legality of swords is often quite variable and the laws quite confusing, depending on where you are. Often, there's a huge distinction between owning something (in your place of residence) and carrying it on your person or in your vehicle.

If a guy uses an illegally-owned gun in self-defense, why wouldn't he still be charged with whatever crime is associated with carrying an illegally-owned gun in the first place?

Running someone through with a sword is quite illegal, yet in self defense it is not prosecuted.

Owning a gun in certain places is often illegal, yet shooting someone who has a gun pointed at you in self defense is often, the same, not prosecuted, even in places where handguns are illegal.

It highly depends on the jury in the US.

But stabbing an intruder with your katana wins massive street cred amongst hardcore anime fans. For mega dorf bucks you could add 'Yea, I would have used my naganata, but I just finished polishing it and didn't want blood on it again'

I don't even pretend to understand the different Japanese swords.

They vary in size and hopeless people argue about them.

I know tanto, wakizashi, katana and no-dachi, because they are the difficulty levels of Sword of the Samurai.

Since no-dachi is the hardest level I assume "dachi" means mercy. No mercy.

GOOGLE TRANSLATE AWAY!!!
Turns out it means start, so 'no start'... Guess Japanese sword masters are pacifist?  ???

They vary in size and hopeless people argue about them.
Also pointyness, and once in a blue moon hopeless people will agree about them, but not often.

According to Wikipedia nodachi (or no-dachi) evolves from ōdachi which means "great sword".

Still, I'm fairly sure it means no mercy.

No start was probably a marketing aspect assuring prospective buyers that their katana need not be revved up to work.
