Dwarfs not eating plants.
« on: May 20, 2007, 04:34:00 pm »

I generated a new world after abandoning my old fortress and created a fortress in this new world, this new fortress is now in year 1055 and all my dwarfs have suddenly stopped eating plants of any kind; but they will eat any other type of food. The economy has started, and the Baron has arrived, and I have reached the magma flow. The dwarfs have been eating plants perfectly for the past years and I have over 100 in stock. If I cannot get them eating again I will have to abandon the fortress or just turn them all into roasts, which is not very feasible now since it loses the seeds, i think it started with an autumn migration but I cannot be sure.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have lots of hauling jobs for your plants? As long as there's food hauling to be done, the game will queue up a food hauling job for every food hauler that you have, which makes the plants unavailable for eating.

Check every dwarfs holdings page, to see if someone is claiming all the food. Sometimes that happens, and when it does no one else can get any of the food he is claiming.

You could butcher some animals if you're desperate for food. Then, brew the plants into alcomohol, and cook it all up with the puppy meat

There was definitely a bug related to this, from the dev page:

01/18/07: Released Dwarf Fortress 0.23.130.23a
01/18/07: Fixed problem with food barrels not working once the economy starts
01/16/07: Released Dwarf Fortress 0.23.125.23b

Once your economy started in that one version 0.23.125.23b, dwarves wouldn't eat food stored in a barrel.  If your version isn't 0.23.130.23a, updating to the latest release might fix it right away.

The food hauling thing is also a likely suspect.  Also, brew more booze.  Eight drinks for 100-some Dwarves, heh.

Thanks for all the replies, but I know it is not food hauling since there are no hauling jobs in the job manager, and the plants are being cooked and brewed (which I presume they wouldn’t if they where being hauled). I have made sure no dwarfs own them all and I am sure they do not, and I am using the newest version.

Edit: I took plump helmets off the brewing and cooking menu and now dwarfs will eat them, oh well. This seems like a bug considering that when plants are going to be brewed it seems they do not eat them or any other plants like them. I just re-enabled brewing on plump helmets and dwarfs stopped eating them again if this is intentional it is very annoying.

My guess:  They're being queued up to get brewed.  Do you have a huge number of brewers / brewing jobs?

And...  why not just turn the plump helmets into alcohol, then cook that?

I do not think they are being queued up to be brewed, because I only have one still and that did not have a brewing job on it at the time. I don’t brew the plump helmets into alcohol because I have no barrels to put it in and (if I did have barrels,) while its being brewed /cooked my dwarfs will starve.

Well how are they starving?

"Other" implies cooked food. Why arent they eating that?

There was no cooked food at that time as it was nearing the end of winter, and I ran out of food I could cook (since I did not want to cook the plump helmets). Please do not ask me why.

I just realised it existed… In addition, this is going against the point of the topic, considering this is reporting a bug due to dwarfs not eating plants when brewing is active. I did not post this topic to get help to make food for my dwarfs, I was merely reporting the plant bug and hoping to get a fix for it; I do know how to get food.

Yeah, the economy bug would have been my first guess, but if you are on 0.23.130.23a and not 0.23.125.23b then I don't have any other ideas.  If this sort of thing is still happening in the new version, we can sort it out at that time.
