Bizarre and/or Disgusting Foods
« on: July 08, 2011, 06:38:07 pm »

I'm not normally one to care about food.  This may partly be because I have a very deficient sense of taste/smell.  It's also because I don't generally care about mild physical comforts.  Eating is something I do for 10 minutes to fulfill biological requirements, and then never think about again.  It's not a meaningful activity, and the quality of the food that I eat has almost no impact on my well-being outside of that 10 minutes.

But my god do people eat some interesting things.  I can't deny that I'm kinda fascinated by some of the more bizarre or even dangerous things that people eat around the world, or that bizarre foods can become interesting cultural artifacts.

The most interesting thing I've ever eaten was some Indian curry that was so spicy it literally gave me a nosebleed.  Some people also seem to think cheese curds are bizarre.

But those are pretty boring compared to abominations like Hakarl or Casu marzu.  I'd like to hear stories from people who have survived foods approaching this level of horror.

Personally, I'd like to try Hakarl someday.  I'd consider it a unique test of fortitude for someone who hasn't thrown up in over 15 years :)

One time I heard that there is this one exotic frog in the wilderness around my area that, if your tongue touches it, you are guaranteed to vomit. The numerous people who have done it have all reportedly said it's the worst or one of the worst things they've ever tasted in their life.

Yeah, it's not a food, just figured I'd contribute something.

There are some cheeses that have bugs squirming inside...

Yeah.  Casu marzu is the undisputed champion of that category, unless there is something unimagineable I haven't heard of.

Has anyone here actually eaten it?  Or any variety of bug-ridden cheese?

Depending on your level of arachnophobia, Milbenkäse might qualify. It uses Cheese mites instead of fly larva.

Although I didn't find it that big of a deal, many people find it difficult to drink snake wine (shejiu). It's pretty much what it says on the label: A large jar of rice "wine", i.e. baijiu, i.e. fairly nasty rice vodka...with an entire snake in it. The snake is usually dropped in alive, drowns in the alcohol and is pickled, and slowly infuses the wine with...snakey goodness.

It's considered a medicinal drink in much of China, Vietnam and a few other places in Southeast Asia. Tastes kind of like Drambuie--cloyingly sweet with a licorice aftertaste.

Now one dish that I won't even go *near* much less stick in my mouth is 臭豆腐 (chou doufu), or "stinky tofu". It's fermented, spiced tofu and doesn't look all that bad. But the smell is....think of rotten garbage which has been marinated in an open sewer, then strained through old socks. The first time I was exposed to it at a street market in Hangzhou, I kept looking around for an open manhole cover, convinced that I was smelling raw sewage. It was the kind of odor that is aggressively bad. I know a lot of Chinese who love it, and defend it by saying "Well you white people eat stinky, moldy cheese. It's the same thing." It is NOT the same thing. I've never smelled Limburger that could clear a city block.

EDIT: Oh, and there's always the Southern US delicacy of pickled pigs' feet. My mom used to eat those, but I just can't bring myself to it. I'll happily eat pickled sausages, which are done up in the same kind of hot pepper-vinegar brine, but not the feet.

Budweiser had a good "Real American Heroes" commercial dedicated to Mr. Pickled Pigs' Feet Eater.

Well, there's always the Swedish(/Scandinavian?) traditional summer food surströmming, literally "sour (as in rotten/gone bad) herring". And that is what it is. Rotten fish. If you like to try it, I'm pretty sure you can find it at IKEA, I believe they sell traditional Swedish food in their stores abroad.

A warning, though - don't eat it inside. Don't open the cans inside. Do not spill any of the liquid inside, you won't get the smell out for months. And it smells. Smells like nothing you've ever smelled before. According to the wiki article above, some Japanese study proclaimed it the most putrid smelling food in the world. And the taste. Seriously. It tastes like shit smells. No, I'm not exaggerating.

And the best part? This is a traditional feastday course in Sweden. Un-fucking-believable. It took a lot of traditional feastday spirits to get that shit down, believe you me.

Straight from Poland! Kaszanka! Cold isn't that bad, but fried it tastes and smells terribly.

Oh oh, we also have blood soup called Czernina, and given amount of sugar and fruits, it tasted fairly decent.

The only personal problem is - can you eat/drink something with a lot of blood in it?

A type of sushi is fermented for 6 months before being eaten. I have been told this is particularly unpleasant...

Okay, since both surstromming and hakarl have been mentioned...

Spoiler: Nordics like fish. (click to show/hide)

There's also mao dan (eggs that have proceeded to the embryo stage) and pi dan ("thousand-year egg"), which is egg preserved in a strongly alkaline mix of clay, ash, rice hulls, and lime and buried for several weeks. They're bluish-black inside and smell like piss.

Blood soup is a concept that definitely gets a reaction from me.  Essentially drinking blood is... just... cannot process.

I had also learned just the other day about Balut/Mao Dan.  That one is pretty bad.

Century Egg... I wouldn't mind trying it.  I probably wouldn't like it.  I've heard it tastes like pure salt.  The idea of it doesn't really bother me, though.

Oh, come on, you can't possibly like cold Kaszanka more than when it's fried!
Personally, I find both not too bad in taste as far as food goes.
What I can't stand from Polish cuisine is Flaczki, that is basically a tripe soup/stew, and Golonka(the jelly-like, half an inch thick fat layer covering the so-so meat inside - urgh!).

Not a big fan of natto either...
