The Private Audiences, King's Strategy Room, Early Spring...

(The Mask) Erik sat back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. Save for Commander Leif, who had been deemed loyal enough to act as bodyguard for such meetings, the King and spy would be alone. For once the Minister of Internal Affairs, Erik's near constant companion in the past few months, was not present -- likely off dealing with his informants or something like that. As the Mask entered, Erik gave a short nod in greeting and motioned to the seat on the opposite side of the table.

Later...

(Ludwig) After the Mask had left, a man by the name of Ludwig was scheduled to meet with Erik in private less than fifteen minutes later. So Erik simply turned to make casual chat with the Commander, casually reminiscing about those who no doubt died in Miring. It was a sad conversation, to be sure.

The King's Chamber, Early Spring...

(Minister Kain) King Erik was surprised that the Minister even needed to request a personal audience. With the way he had been acting the past few days, Erik had assumed Kain would simply begin such an audience whenever the moment suited. He supposed there was still some need for formality, even among friends, however. When the request had been made, the Minister had been invited to Erik's chamber for a bottle of wine that night, though Erik preferred less refined beverages he understood the favor such drinks held amongst most members of his court. "So, Kain," he asked, offering the Minister a freshly poured glass, "What is it you needed to speak to me about?"

The Sheepstead Palace, Early Spring...

(Mahtan 3+2) You return to your palace and set to work to examining Gunther's bloated corpse. Luckily, it isn't bloated beyond recognition and your monkey is able to make up for the gaps in your research. (+30 research points) However, you're only able to get so much work done before the palace guard, spear-headed by a knight you don't recall ever seeing before, arrives at your door. The King wants to see you.

The Streets of Sheepstead, Early Spring...

(Ludwig 5) You tail the merchant, and find that you're quickly able to learn how best to slip in and out of crowds and alleys, as well as how to blend in with the world around you. All said and done, today has been a productive day of work (+30 research points towards Stealth)

Southern Eelspine Range, Early Spring...

(Meng 3+1) With the 2 ducats worth of meat you have been given by the Nahk, and your natural affinity with animals, you're quickly able to tame the bears. By the end of spring the Nahk will have a regiment of bears (Heavy Berserker).

(The Nahk 1+1-1) Both of your regiments attempt to claim the plateau, but three nights in a freak blizzard tears through the area. Many men die of frostbite, and when all is said and done the surviving men with enough fingers to hold their weapons correctly are only enough to constitute a single regiment.

(Kytuzian 3) Luckily, it doesn't look like your guards have reported on anything but a daily prayer session planned between yourself and your acolyte, Meng. (Meng 4) Even better, Meng's guards don't even bother to report about that.

Preston, Early Spring... (Partially Iituem's Post)

Terenos and the Preston Fleet of 2 Warships return one early morning, carrying with them their grave tale of Elbreth's loss.

(Tearakudo) You make some short inquiries at Port Sleen.  There are still serious shortages of staple goods and instability will be keeping military goods prices high for quite some time.  [4] Grain is selling for the princely sum of 2.5d/shipment, should you wish to cash in on your investment.  At this point there is no sales tax in place in Miring, though rumour amongst the merchants is that the sales tax in Vasir is being reinstated and will now be in line with that along the rest of the Storm Coast. (3) Soon after your dealings are finished, you realize that one of the Preston ships you pulled into port alongside are bearing Terenos d'Avistral's banner. Further, the Preston banners of the castle have been replaced by those of Elbreth's.

The Port of Vasir... (Iituem's Post)

(Hans) [5] With the blockade on Port Sleen lifted, you load your wool shipments aboard the two vessels under your hire and make excellent time reaching Vasir.  [6+1] Your early arrival means that you catch the best possible prices for the start of Spring, and the local clothworkers are eager to pay top ducat for your wares.  At 2.25d/shipment, you make 4.5 ducats on the sale.  This should leave you some 2 ducats in pocket.

There is somewhat less pleasing news from one of your fellow merchants.  Now that Spring has started, Vasir is reintroducing its 10% Sales Tax on goods.  You just managed to avoid it this time, but it appears that the tax holiday had been in honour of Duke yl Marchis' 50th birthday.  This tax rate is about equal to the rate going in the rest of the Storm Coast.

The High Seas...

(Renard 3-1) You sail around for a while, but you're unable to find any islands that you can attempt to settle. You'd be better off heading from port to port for a time, until you can afford maps or someone straight up tells you about a city where pirates frequent.

(Locanil/Drua 2) A rain-storm blows your ship off-course. Where you would have arrived by mid-spring you will now likely not arrive till the advent of summer. Though there's always a chance you'll come across land before then, or that you'll make better time in Mid-Spring.

The Weyland Highlands...

(Sir Joseph 2-1) Despite not really knowing where you're headed, you set off to Weybridge anyways, in an attempt to assassinate the leader of the McKinley clan. You are also dressed as a warrior, despite the warnings against such things. However, before you're even halfway there a band of armed men appear from out of nowhere, immediately surrounding you. Weapons bared, their leader grins viciously and calls out "'ey! Drop yer weapon, an' maybe we'll let ya live!"

(Doc 2) You're unable to find any terrain advantages that either side could make use of, but the good thing is that Sir Jormund's berserker tacticians have joined up with the main group as you marched.
(?) As you march into your former lands, you realize that the village has been razed to the ground. Your people have been enslaved a third time, no doubt, as they are nowhere to be found amidst the smoldering wreckage. As you march deeper into the village, in search of the McKinley forces, the burnt corpses begin to rise and the ashes of the buildings begin to stir and rise amidst a glimmer of steel. Your men don't even have time to draw their weapons before the ambushers are upon them.

The Battle for Doc McJohnston's Land

McJohnston: 2 Regular Infantry (1 each), Heavy Berserkers (str 3) and Tactician Berserkers (str 2 + 1 tact) led by Sir Jormund (Total: STR 7 + 1 tactics) and 2 Tactician Berserkers (str 2 + 1 tact each) led by Donald McMurray (Total: STR 4 + 2 tactics) (TOTAL: STR 11)
McKinley: 3 Heavy Ambushers (str 2 each), 1 Tactician Ambusher Regiment (str 1 each) (Total: STR 7 + 2 ambush + 1 tactics + 1 tactics) and 1 Ambush Regiment (str 1), 1 Berserker Ambush Regiment (str 2) (Total: STR 3 + 2 ambush + 1 tactics) (TOTAL: STR 14)

Tactics: [REQ 7:Roll 7] Because of the nature of the Doctor's tactics, Sir Jormund's group is immediately split from Donald's group. While Sir Jormund's men face the brunt of the opposing force, Donald McMurray's men will have to cut through an ambush regiment and a berserker ambush regiment before they can aid the main group.
Sir Jormund's men attempt to organize the Doctor's forces so that they're able to cycle their wounded to the back, keeping fresh troops at the front of the battle as they pull back to avoid being surrounded. [REQ 2:Roll 2] Their attempts are effective, though not for a lack of trying on the McKinley's part. Meanwhile, Donald McMurray leads his men in a pincer-flank [REQ 2: Roll 7], and easily pull it off; the ambushers were expecting the opposing force to be only what had entered the burnt-out village.
Meanwhile, the McKinley's heavy berserkers, led by an expert tactician, attempt to charge the main group in order to do as much damage as possible [REQ 2: Roll 5]

Round 1:
Sir Jormund: 5+1+1+3+2+2 = 12
vs
Roy McKinley 2+2+2+2+1+2 = 11

Donald McMurray 5+2+2+1 = 9
vs
McKinley Ambushers 3+1+2 = 7

Sir Jormund's tacticians are apt and in a complete reversal from the cavern debacle Sir Jormund and his tacticians are able to form a tight circle, staggering backward whilst cycling out their men to avoid more than a few casualties in the initial assault. (No Manskinner Forces Lost; McKinleys lose a Heavy Ambusher Regiment and a Tactician Ambusher Regiment)

Meanwhile, Donald McMurray's men carve a bloody swathe through their opposing forces, though not at the cost of some men. The remaining McMurray regiment quickly joins Sir Jormund, flanking McKinley forces from the west. (Tactician Berserker lost; McKinleys lose ambush regiment and berserker ambush regiment)

Round 2:
Sir Jormund and Donald McMurray: 2+1+1+3+2+2+1 = 12
vs
Roy McKinley: 5+2+2+2 = 11

Though the McKinley's fight valiantly, Sir Jormund personally leads his and the Doctor's men in brutally cutting down the opposing forces as they move to retreat -- directly into Donald McMurray's remaining men. The battle still rages for a long time, however, and by the time Sir Jormund's longsword has found its way to Roy McKinley's heart Donald McMurray has been rendered unconscious and his men slain or mortally wounded. (Tactician Berserkers killed; McKinley forces wiped out to a man)

As the dust clears, you realize all you've done is put yourself back in the position you were before first beginning to take lands. Darn.

Battle Recap

Roy McKinley got cocky here, and it cost him his life. Going into the new year, he had led his uncle's men in a crushing victory against Manskinner forces. And he thought he could do so again. However, he didn't count on the flank splitting his forces, and he underestimated just how useful encircling Manskinner forces had been last time. By going for the route, he decided to forfeit a slight advantage in order to try and cripple the Manskinner army after they had already recruited as much as they could. This obviously didn't go as planned (though it could have. The dice were against him).
However, things could have gone somewhat different had Sir Joseph not been around. In the second round of combat, McKinley forces were dangerously close to a draw, and had one of their heavy ambush regiments not been tied up in dealing with a wandering warrior in their lands (Sir Joseph) then they might well have had the numbers to take a victory and beat a retreat...saving Roy McKinley's life.

In the future, McKinley forces will be lead by a more experienced tactician. They will not make this sort of mistake again.

Ludwig was wearing fine clothes and a blue, wide hat with a feather that he had recently bought, the blue complimented his eyes. Entering the king's study he took a deep bow and removed his hat. He saw the king nod and began to speak.

"My king, I am glad that you have employed me and I took the liberty of arming myself. There are things that I must speak to you with. Firstly, I would like to have my own quarters, I use poisons and powders in my work and having a place to prepare them would greatly help me. I would also like to have access to the palaces's library and to alchemical ingredients. Secondly I must ask you of my pay, I can't work for free."

Kain took the glass, swirled the wine around a bit and then sipped it with a smile.
"I have two important orders of business...The first makes me a bit uncomfortable...and the second...and the second makes me downright twicthy..."
Kain laspes into a silence- sipping his wine -and then finally sighs,
"The Ministery needs money. Last years destruction of the spy ring took most of my money, for this year. The Ministry needs four ducats to continue operations..."

Sir Jormund was glad the fighting was over. He knew that some things required fighting but these barbarians fighting pettily over the land almost sickened him. That was one of the main reasons he was still willing to help them fight; if he could help one of the Jarls get a firm grip over the region then much blood shed could probably be spared in the future. For now though, at least he had managed to kill one of the McKinleys. Hopefully it would be a blow that would weaken them or at least shake them. Now that the fighting was over there wasn't much else to be done except for bury the dead, until further orders were received. Jormund would wait until he received word of what they should do, but in his mind it only made sense to press the advantage while they had it. It might also be helpful to see if they could get that Ehndras fellow to help them in the campaign as well.

"Here!" The bear trotted towards Meng slowly, ah all was good, well it appeared the bears were good enough for whatever the Zimtar would use them for, unfortunately it would probably be combat. Meng picked up the gleaming pile of coins and shoved them into his satchel, a whole ducat, time to leave before the Nahk learned of the cost of the meat.

There was one thing left to do however, Meng quickly wrote a note, took out 1 of the 4 bolts he had been hiding all this time, a strip of meat and walked past Kytuzian's chambers with a bear following "A word with the prisoner please, need to schedule our prayer you see"

"So Kytuzian, tommorow is a prayer day, when should I come next?" Meng drops the meat, note and bolt in the room and after keeping up the false conversation continues a while Meng leaves the room leaving the bear inside. He then starts walking, returns to his quarters gathers everything up, and then he and his two animal companions head for Miring without a word to anyone.

Spoiler: The Note (click to show/hide)

Lead a bear into Kytuzian's chambers and give him the note, a strip of meat and a crossbow bolt, then start heading to Miring. Also if for some reason a GM decides I do not actually have the 1 ducat in payment (in addition to 2 ducats for meat) take a bear to the treasury and steal one by force, otherwise all is good.

Trubaldsome climbed out of the bath with a sleepy sigh, pulling his plush, fur-lined purple bathrobe from the brass hook near the tub and shrugging into it. He yawned loudly. The main thing he wanted to do was sleep... But, he had a Kingdom to run, so he padded over to the door.
"Waery!" "Yes, M'lord?" "See to it that that fool Taric is put in the stocks in the main square. We have more food than people these days, so let the peasants throw the excess at him."
Waery sounded a little unsure. "Uh... M'lord, th' folk'll kill him, most likely."
Trubaldsome shrugged his shoulders as he turned from the door to head over to his huge, four-poster bed. He felt exhausted, suddenly, and his feet were like lead weights.
"Oh, station a couple of... Soldiers, I suppose. To keep him alive. But I don't want them getting theirselves killed."
Then he thumped down on the bed and was asleep.

Have Taric placed in stocks in the main square of the city, allowing the peasants to line up and throw rotten food at him. Place a couple of guards to ensure he doesn't end up dead... Yet.

his head hurt...horribly. A pinkish bandage affixed to his head, the Jarl returned. Gaunt, tired, cold and staggering. What went wrong? Why didn't he react? He could have fled with his soldiers easily, sacrificing the Radicals for his own men. Instead he only stood there...doing nothing...he passed a clean-picked corpse, some man wearing the Insignia...

The Manskinner stopped. His face went even paler. In front of him there lay his lands. Burned skeletons of houses, the ashes still glimmering, corpses strewn around. What had that fool done? He only ordered him to take care of business and keep a low profile. Instead he encountered depopulaced burning remains of villages. His face grew dark...

an undefined time later

THE JARL IS RETURNING!

Corv ignored the greeting soldiers, his face a mask of rage and hate, latter quite instantly realizing what was about to happen and getting out of the way. The camp contained too few men, to many old and young to few seasoned soldiers. Something, somewhere had gone terribly wrong. Reg came down the the slop on which the Command tent had been errected. the lumbering giant was grinning over both ears to see his lord back.

OI! SKINNER! The Murrays will be glad that yer back, same with the McHales.

Corv couldn't resist to smile and hugged the giant.

Glad to seey ou old fella. But who are the Hales?

the smile of the giant turned into a frown

Yer new vassals. Tha' Doc 'ired 'em.

the Jarl nodded gravely then climbed the slope. He ripped the tent flapes away so that everyone in the room might be blinded by the light, his body a shadowy outline against the sun. His voice was cold as ice  and his face a mask as he spoke.

Tell me why i shouldn't beat you to the death right on the spot, Steward? My lands are burning, my people dying and that army out there consists of Old Men and Green Boys.

The Mask walked into the room, noting the absence of everyone else except for the commander. Returning the nod, Mask sat down in the chair and placed a book from within his cloak onto the table.

"Greetings sire. I trust I find you in good health? As I do not wish to take up too much of your time, I shall get to the point quickly.

Being a spy is not exactly cheap I am afraid. I have found various recruits that look somewhat promising, but I am stymied by the lack of funds. I have made some rough calculations and have come to the conclusion that each spy master under our bidding will cost 2 ducats to hire. My services are free for now however, since I serve you directly. This is expensive, I can see that, but I have good news for you sire, as I have a plan to fix this. Have a look for yourself."

Mask pushes the book forward to the king. As the king reads, Mask reaches inside his cloak and takes a small swig from a personal flask.

The book contains the following:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"These businesses will be able to not only provide the funding I require, but in time will also be able to give money directly to the crown if need be. I have not made any permenant actions as of yet, so these plans can be canceled at a moments notice, if you wish. You need not worry about handling the accountancy of these businesses, I shall handle that, and you also need not worry about the crowns image as I shall manage these under a false identity. This also has the benefit of helping to infiltrate the various merchant guilds that have influence in the land as well as providing obvious benefits to the land itself.

In order to start this, I require total funds of 7 ducats. Do I have your permission to begin with this, sire?"

"I think that should be in another two days", answered Kytuzian while taking the note, meat, and the bolt. What kind of idiot uses this short of an arrow? I mean what bow actually shoots these? I'll have to ask Meng that later. If I find him again. Not that I really want to, seeing as he might not be keen on the fact that I have no money whatsoever to pay him with.

Kytuzian quickly read the note. Okay. He wants me to stab the hell of the guard and run, thought Kytuzian. How original. To bad I don't have time to regain my weapons and armour.

Feed the bear the meat, grab the bolt and stab the hell out of the guard. Grab all his weapons and run as fast as possible back to Lonemine.

The Doctor tried to stifle a laugh at the Jarl. "Well, first off, you'll need a proper doctor for those wounds, and I'm the only doctor around here." He said, turning more serious as he begin listing his accomplishments. "And I nearly doubled your land while you were gone. Those burning villages you saw was land we lost, after we had taken it from the McKinleys. Sure, we lost a lot of our men, but the progress is what counts. With the raiders all fixed up we can begin raiding the Mckinleys, or Munros, to raise more raiders. I hope you haven't forgotten who fixed them? All in all I, if barely, made great progress for us. Also, on the topic of the soldiers, how new or old they are doesn't matter, Corv. As long as they can fight that's what matters." He leaned in a bit closer to the Jarl and began talking in a hushed voice. "Also, an outlaw from Elbreth has found his way into our lands. I sent him on a mission to take our the McKinley's Jarl. Just imagine, if he takes him out we'll gain a big advantage. Then we simply give him to Elbreth as a sign of trust." Leaning away he talked normally, raising an eyebrow and waiting for a response. "So, Manskinner, do you want to beat the only doctor in your lands to death? The man who doubled the area you control? The man who has strengthened your army, even if this has forced many others to die? I'm going to assume no."
"Now, unless you have any objections, I'm going to try to salvage what I can from the wounded." He said, walking away.
Unless Corv has an objection try to fix up the wounded of the last battle.

[6-1] Smuggling in the meat, note and bolt is no problem, but your presence attracts the attention of the guards... [4-3] making your attempt to smuggle in a bear downright impossible.  You are escorted away and informed that your services will no longer be required.  You receive payment as expected and depart for Miring.

"I think that should be in another two days", answered Kytuzian while taking the note, meat, and the bolt. What kind of idiot uses this short of an arrow? I mean what bow actually shoots these? The bear part of the plan is scuppered, but there's always good old stabbing and running.  Shame there are two guards...

Kytuzian:  +1 Weapon.  3/3hp
Guards:  +1 Weapon, +1 Armour.  2/2hp

[4+1 vs 5+2]  Your initial rush is spotted instantly by the guard, who evades it and stabs you through the arm with his spear.  The stroke misses any major blood vessels, but a stab in the arm is still a stab in the arm.  He yells for his companion to assist him.  [Kytuzian 2hp]

[2+1 vs 3+2]  You try to make a break for it, but the guard just twists the spear before pulling it out.  You sink to your knees from the pain.  [Kytuzian 1hp]

[3+1 vs 4+2]  The guard smacks you hard in the back of the head with the butt of the spear.  You black out.

When you awake again, someone has very crudely bound the wound in your arm and your arms and legs have been bound up with rope.  They aren't taking any more chances.

You commission a brand new cargo ship in Preston, the pride of the docks.  Sadly, this does use up all the available sailors in the port, but it's not like that's your problem is it?  [4] Low quality lumber is available at 0.7d/tonne and [1] fish is running at 0.3d/tonne, due to a glut stemming from the recent emigration issues.  Fish is the more volatile and cheaper product, so you purchase two tonnes of smoked cod and ship it off to Vasir.

You meet up with the captain of the Valiant, who is very pleased to see you.  He welcomes you into his cabin and breaks open a bottle of yl Marchis '98.  [2] The captain doesn't talk much about the recent change to Elbreth, but he thanks you for coming to their aid at Port Sleen.  When asked about the banner he mentions that it belonged to the noble who secured the Admiral several tax breaks under the new rulers - the Admiral himself has left to administer his lands.

[6-1] At one point during the voyage, not long after leaving Preston, there was a sighting of a sail on the horizon, flying the banner of a white cross on a red field.  The ship outpaced the other vessels with little trouble and arrived in Vasir without further trouble.  [3+1]  Local fish prices seem to be stable at 1.6d/tonne, so you sell up for 3.2d.

Purchase 1 cloth, 1 grain in Vasir and sell in Miring.
You purchase one shipment of cloth at 4d and check grain prices; [1] an impressive 0.4d.  You purchase a bay's worth of grain and set sail for the port of Miring.  [3-1]  Along the way you catch sight of a sail on the horizon, flying the flag of a white cross on a red field.  Fearing its intent, you take care to avoid the ship though the added journey time leaves you in a less than desirable position for your next purchases.  [5-1] Cloth is 4.5d/tonne whilst [5-1] Grain is selling for 2.5d.  Unfortunately, cash is now running short in Miring and the wholesalers can only afford to purchase the cloth; you sell it off, leaving 0.5d in ready cash in Miring's economy.  Given the good price for grain, you might consider buying something immediately before you sell the grain in your stores - if only to give the market enough money to buy it off you.

In rather poor news for Miring, both its primary exports are in high demand during wartime.  Low Quality lumber is fetching in at a price of [2] 1.6d/tonne and Fish is even worse at [6] 2.2d/tonne.

Unless Corv has an objection try to fix up the wounded of the last battle.

[2] It is no good.  Too much time has passed for you to do anything for them now.  You will just have to recruit what new troops you may.  At least you still have the Blodvindr Raiders, now that they have recovered.

[6 vs 3-1]  Two of yl Marchis' messengers arrive back in Sheepstead and deliver their letters to the king before Terenos returns with his regiment to deliver his report.

"Heh, I'm gussing you're here for me. I hope you're know what you're doing"

Attempt to escape while they're transporting me to the city square (Preferably by beating the crap out of them) If that is successful, take their weapons and armour and head to the throne room

You flash the two guards a bit of a grin as they unlock your leg irons to transport you from the dungeons.  You still have the manacles on your hands, [2] but the idiots were smart enough to bind your arms behind your back.  Your legs are free, though.

Taric:  No advantages.  3/3hp
Guards:  +1 Weapon, +1 Armour.  2/2hp

[1 vs 2+2]  You let loose a kick at one of the guards, but he jumps back out of the way.  His companion whips you across the back of the head with the pommel of his sword.  As the black spots clear from your eyes you recognise the fine Sword Coast metalworking in the blade.  [Taric 2hp]

[4 vs 2+2]  The guard who struck you grabs you across the chest so his friend can take a bit of a run up to kick you in the nads.  You lash out at the last moment, smacking him in the teeth with your foot and knocking him to the ground.  The guard holding you adjusts the position of his arm and starts choking you.  [Taric 1hp, Guards 1hp]

[6...] You can't break the grip with your arms, but you can still kick.  You stamp hard on his boot, hard enough that the guard reflexively lets go.  You break free and turn, letting loose another high kick and getting him in the throat.  He drops his sword, clutching at his neck and trying to cough free his jammed windpipe.  You knee him in the crotch, sending him to the ground struggling and gagging.

With the second guard out of the way you kneel and try to unhook the keys from the guard's belt with your toes.  You get it.  It's just a question of getting them to your hands so you can unlock the manacles, now.

You become aware that the gagging from the guard has stopped.  Then you hear the scrape of iron on stone.  [...vs 6+2] You turn just in time to catch the pommel of the sword heading for your face.

You are woken up by an ungodly smell and the wet, lumpy sensation of rotten vegetables being pelted against your face.  A haddock sails through the air and slaps against your left eye.  You are securely bound within the stocks in the town square and the populace are taking their vengeance with great glee.
