(( Oh shite. I just realized that I previously said it took around 5-7 seven weeks to reach the countries that have kyrite. With the knowledge that Preston is a month away, this doesn't make sense. I guess Korlan should be around 3-7 months journey south. I have no idea. Iituem or thatkid please decide))

"Mahtan I have heard you have created weapons of war, something you call a 'ballista'. I ask you if you could create smaller, more mobile , faster firing versions (think of the scorpions the Romans used). "

"And I would like to ask you if you can help me find a material or chemical that would help in turning a solid object into liquid. It would be very useful"

Locanil lets that sink in for a few seconds

"I ask you and not the king because you have the ingenuity to make it...and because the king doesn't necessarily have the same ideas as I do. I do not say that I do treason, its just that I don't know if my ideas could work, which is why I asked you"

((First off, it was an accident and I have no interest in it.  Second off, just tell the king that. Third off, way to make my character invalid thanks for that.  I'm glad I nearly died 4 times for something that another place already has, that's great.  Nthly, I don't care about recognition, especially since some place ALREADY has them, that would be academic suicide to steal from another source, and I'm already considered crazy and malaligned as is.  FTHOFly when the hell did your guy become a engineer?  I though he was some sort lizard wizard. GORGOly I didn't even demonstrate gunpowder, and you weren't here during any of the times I did have it, so you Shouldn't even know I know what it is!))

Response to previous post:

Well, I kinda thought I would of heard of it from the servants, I mean they would probably talk about the goings on in the courts and I mean really, when you put the castle on fire would'nt the servants be gossiping about it? you've made a ballista that has impressed the king and nobles. The commoners probably treat you as one of the king's more favored guest. And about the gunpowder; it was discovered in different places at different times. The Chinese discovered it around 1 AD while the nations around the Mediterranean took an additional 1300-1700 years. It wouldn't be wrong to invent something someone else already has when no one even knows, including yourself. And about my occupation, I never stated that Locanil was a wizard. I stated he was a chronicler and acolyte of Oritziem, this allowed him to call upon spirits as active worships brings this. However, most worshippers never call upon the spirits as it can be dangerous, risky, and expensive. About the engineer part; Locanil doesn't know how to create a cannon or bomb, but he was supposedly supposed to have seen some. By schematics, I mean pictures of the general shape, but that dosen't matter anymore since I've edited my post.

Oh, and I like your guy crazy :D . Makes him intresting and many geniuses were called crazy once or twice. And I can't tell if your angry or if your trying to make your post humorous but, sorry. Lets just forget about this whole thing,please....))

Not in the mood to write out dialogue sorry.

I'm sorry, but I can not go against the king, he's kinda the only reason I'm still alive.  Also there already pretty small, any smaller then there'd be crossbows.

((There really already small))

Mahtan excuses himself, cause he'd really like to check out his quarters.

((Well, it was only an idea. It doesn't really matter. I'll just watch what Mahtan does and see what I can do with it))

Well that would slow down the plan, Locanil thought. He best do what he could do however. he would continue to teach the peasants. He couldn't do anything about Mahtan, he would have to take the slow and straight path to victory...

5-7 weeks on a very fast caravel, by sea.  In short, it took you 5-7 weeks to travel here from there because you had the wind on your side and you had hired passage on a fast ship.  A man on a fast horse on a direct road (there isn't one) might take two or three times as long.  A man or group of travellers on good roads might take 3-4 months.  Armies march significantly slower than individual travellers because of the baggage train, so although it only took Terenos a week on a fast horse to get back from Miring to Elbreth, it took him and his royal escort several weeks to march that same distance back.  Marching from Elbreth to Preston takes even longer for the full royal army because of the difficulty of marching that many troops (plus the slight additional distance).

Ships are fast.  That's why waterways and ports were so important at this level of technological development.

How much would a band like this cost to train?))

Scout Unit:  Str 1 infantry.  Raise cost 2 Ducats, 1 manpower, upkeep 1.5 Ducats.  Confer ambush immunity (units stacked with scouts cannot be ambushed), can take part in defense vs raids but not raider-capable.  On a simple d6 roll of 3 or better, can escape from combat before battle starts.  If used to boost a scouting check (i.e. the whole unit is deployed for scouting), +2 to the RtD scouting roll - but on a natural 1 the unit is destroyed.  Can pass through enemy territory undetected (i.e. travelling through territory rather than just scouting it) on a simple d6 roll of 4 or better.  Can be used to counter-scout (find and eliminate other scouts) within an area, adding a -1 penalty per scout to enemy scouting checks, but units used in this way cannot also be used to scout.

Roll all die rolls separately for individual scout units.

[3]  Your men aren't really equipped for quarrying or mining, but they collect lots of small, loose stones scattered across the mountainside.  You could build a drywall with them, but the stone isn't high enough quality or specially cut enough to provide any real advantage to constructing it.
[3]  The goatherds are more or less under your thumb anyway, so they decide to join you in name as well.  Sadly, they only number about twenty or thirty in total, so beyond the lands you've already taken from them it makes little difference.
[3-2]  Unfortunately, Eelspine is still a pretty miserable place and you have no luck at all trying to colonise more of it.  Colonising Eelspine is always going to be a difficult, expensive job for anyone who attempts it.

((Perhaps, Micelus, your character could just take an interest in Mahtan's work, and offer to help him research it? As I'm -pretty- sure the GMs decreed him being the first to dicover it was canon. Could be wrong though. :) ))

What the hell.  Canon/Cannon (eventually).  You get to have invented gunpowder in this part of the world.  (I promise nothing regarding distant continents you haven't heard of.)  Ballistae are pretty much well described, you just built one out of semi-boredom and inspiration.  The design exists elsewhere in the known world, it just didn't reach Elbreth.  Crossbows exist too as you've mentioned but the mechanisms are expensive to make, limiting their spread.

[Incidentally, this was the main factor for the limit of crossbow use in Reformation Europe (though the cost of producing longbows also increased around this time due to reduced supplies of appropriate lumber).  Whilst longbows were superior to early guns, guns were cheaper to make and train with.  Crossbows were superior to longbows in terms of sheer firepower (but not fire rate) but expensive to make if much easier to train with.  Repeating crossbows overcame this problem but never really made it to Europe in a big way.  By comparison, they were used to great effect during the very end of the Spring and Autumn and the Five Kingdoms periods in early China (~350-200BC) and thereafter, where they pretty much replaced shortbows as the ranged weapon of choice for armies and remained that way for a good thousand or more years.

Whilst I'm on the subject, the Chinese invented rockets, cannons, hand-cannons and long-gonnes a few good decades before they hit Europe.  The only thing Europe beat them to in the gunpowder game was rifling.]

Also, on Locanil's spirit-calling, I'm going to rule that whilst technically it would count as magic (spirit summoning, communing, not following strictly mundane laws of nature) it is completely socially acceptable in his culture and considered such a mundane thing that none of his people even consider it magic at all but rather a result of simply being pious - save for the interfering effects of kyrite when trying to commune.  In other words, minimal real cost and no social cost when performing it in their homeland.  Right now, gunpowder use would be a more controversial practice.

Locanil came in as a lizard-scholar rather than a lizard-priest or lizard-engineer, so he gets to dabble in a bit of both but he's not really either (no bonuses to checks - but I need to remember to give Mahtan bonuses to alchemy and possibly engineering checks in future).  Locanil will probably get +1 to lore and knowledge checks, though.

So yeah, Mahtan's hardly invalid.  Different characters, different skill bases.

Mahtan excuses himself, cause he'd really like to check out his quarters.

[5]  Your quarters are pretty damn sweet.  Four poster bed, nice clear tables for you to set up equipment on, plenty of space for you to build things in, wardrobe and ensuite privy/chamberpot.  There's even a bell you can ring for servants when you want meals.  You've hit jackpot.

Send some of my guards to search the surrounding area of the city for physicians, apothecaries and/or faith healers, to arrange a meeting with Trubaldsome.

[4]  Your men are able to persuade all eight of the city's legitimate doctors and apothecaries (and most of the twenty illegitimate ones) to eventually see you.  Unfortunately when you reveal your condition most of them agree with Drua's original prognosis and are unable to help.  One of the less than legal doctors does mention that he knew one man that did know where a cure might be obtained; a doctor Turock McJohnston, formerly operating out of Brighthall.  Unfortunately, last the physician heard Dr McJohnston had left Brighthall due to a combination of wanderlust and financially disastrous malpractice - apparently he had to spend most of his remaining money on a bodyguard to prevent his creditors taking him to the cleaners.  Since then his location has been unknown.

Drua pauses for a moment, then decides to follow the band of soldiers that are well-equipped.

You decide not to follow the loot wagon.  Sure enough, the small crew of soldiers and their peg-legged leader get all the way out of the city and join up with a pair of regiments just outside the city limits.  It takes a moment for you to realise the standards they fly are those of the Crown of Elbreth!

Drua locates Terenos' regiments.

Jormund orders the attack on the Yevenov and attempts to have his men and the Raiders work together to form an ambush but unfortunately his men aren't exactly trained for that type of thing. They still have the numerical advantage though, which should hopefully pull them through.

Go through with the attack on the Yevenovs' land using the personal regiment as well as the ztahs.
Mind resolving this if you're on?

Busy sorting out flats atm.  That said...

Go through with the attack on the Yevenovs' land using the personal regiment as well as the ztahs.

[1+2 vs 6+1]  Unfortunately, the Yevenovs prove to have remarkably good reflexes.  You and your Baikov allies charge the Yevenovs whilst they are eating, but the Yevenovs quickly raise weapons to defend themselves.  Not only are they able to respond in time, the Baikov's break at the last moment and rout, giving the Yevenovs time to butcher your suddenly shaken men with impunity.  You escape, but as you flee with your last couple of supporters you watch as the Yevenovs chase down the fleeing Baikovs and cut them down.

You have suffered a total defeat and lost both regiments under your control.  The Yevenovs took barely more than a handful of casualties.  [6]  The good news is that the Baikovs were more or less wiped out in the attack, so you can probably claim the 1 parcel of land they used to have.  The bad news is that news of this will spread quickly enough that if the Yevenovs don't also try to claim the land, someone else will - and thanks to paying the Baikovs, right now you don't have so much as a Ducat to your name.

Ask goat herders where there is habitable land up here
Ask goat herders if there are any towns or villages up here
use stones to build a rockslide traps on the hunting paths in case Suul gets any ideas
Search for habitable land close to Suul

[6]  The Baikovs are willing to fight for the usual fee of 1.5 Ducats, but they reckon you probably don't have much money.  They instead offer you a deal; several of their kinsmen were killed by Brighthall soldiers doing a sweep for some manner of bandit from their side of the border.  If you can bring them the head of the bandit they were after, they'll happily join you for some raids.

I thought that since I successfully brought them a raiders head I didn't have to pay them. They were going to get half of the raid's reward but since that didn't work out they wouldn't get anything. Either way though Go and claim the Baikov land and attempt to found a town.

Corv felt somewhat uncomfortable with all the copper banding but the doctor did good work, although he couldn't speak anymore...for three months.

This doctor is good, i will keep him.

As the scouts returned the longhouse was again filled to the breaking point, now with the additional presence of Johnston and his followers replacing the McKenzie leadership.

A sheepskin was brought to the Manskinner inclusively a quill and a slave which had to offer some of his blood to work as replacment for the ink. Some of the Weylanders looked suspiciously as Corv began to write, others spit out of fear of curse, but the Mc Murrays were mostly interested in this art of sound-painting. Donald was uncomfortably leaning close over the back of his Chief eyeing every movement of his hand. Finally finished he handed the sheepskin to Jorun:

The Ewans are weakened and the McKinleys are propably intelligent enough not to waste more troops to support them. Due to my inability to talk Mc Johnston will prove his worth on the battlefield and earn his position as Hônd among us. Donald will be the second-in-command and make sure that the Doc doesn't try something.

"Sorry Chief i can't read yer strange thing. None o' us can."

Corv frowned and handed the skin on to the doctor. The writing was clearly scripture from the area of the Northern Sword Coast, but still the question remained whether the doctor could read it....
