"It's not exactly out of your hands... people take "prisoners" all the time, I am simply your "prisoner" and I am "Serving my time" under house arrest were I'm "paying my dues to society" by making something that will help the war effort, as well as other things I guess.  Also I wouldn't have to serve jail time at all? I was working for the king, and if something goes wrong while I'm in custody, it's the kings fault for giving me the supplies... so in fact forget the prisoner bit, I just need a FAR away lab to work in and.."

Mahtan stares at his hands.

Maybe an assistant.

((Do I have to pay upkeep this year or next?))

Kain stood proudly on the balcony above the town sqaure, where the huddled masses of his people stood. They stared at thier ruler with a mixture of fear and bewilderment. Kain popped a pastille into his mouth, swallowed and  then began speaking in his raspy voice.
"My people, our army  is now accepting new recruits! Think about the glory and gold that can be used to enrich your lives. Think about joining my new regiment. The Copper Gloves! Sign-ups can be registered by that dubious looking offical standing in front of my house holding that rather large stick."

He chuckled as he noticed most of the young men rush toward the offical.
He was still smiling as he wandered into the foyer.
"Ah you must be the engineer I need. Come, come, come into my dining room and lets discuss some work for you over luncheon."

Add to my guard
Hire an engineer

Upkeep has been paid for this year, but you still have to spend 1 Ducat to increase your personal guard beyond that first regiment (which you do, leaving you with 1 Ducat in your treasury).  You can later spend another ducat if you should so wish to raise a regiment from the 2 parcels of land you control.

[4]  Your aides write to various officials in the surrounding regions.  They learn of a three of military engineers available for hire in Preston, Miring and Suul respectively.  Each one will likely demand 1 Ducat for his services, but an alternate use for one of them could be to set up an academy for training new engineers (this would produce engineers on a yearly basis).

((Engineers last until you use them right?))
Write to the king for permission to take control of a few un-owned parcels of land around and in the eelspine
Send out a scout  see how many parcels in the eelspine are untamed wilderness or have bandits/clans.

((Hmm...I improved my military and my town this turn, so are these actions legal by game rules? If not, disregard them...))

((Warning, Rambling ahead. Wherein Terenos sums up what occured during his months away. The 'assassination' attempt? That's a story he'll share when hes drunk.))

Terenos bows deeply upon his admittance to the council chambers.
"I bring mixed news, My king. Firstly and foremost, I have apparently secured trade with Preston, I am sure you are well aware of this however as I was passed several times by merchants bringing preserved fish. I also bear a full report of the military layout of Preston.
They possess 6 Regiments of infantry under the Crown, and 4 under various nobles. And a modest navy of light ships and a carrack.

The reason for this excessive military deployment? War. War brews between Preston and Miring, and I managed to get caught in the middle of it. This war is to occur this year. I stole the military plans of Preston with the intention of delivering them to Miring to prevent a crushing victory. Key nobles were set to defect to Preston's side, allowing a swift decisive victory. Bandits waylaid me, I am still unsure if they were in the employ of Preston or traitorous nobles, or what have you. But there I lost my regiment.
Upon my arrival in Miring I was yet again waylaid. This time by a traitorous noble. He proved far less capable than I with a blade and after being called an assassin, and some rather heavy fighting in the halls I managed to reach the King of Miring in his council chambers.
When I revealed the evidence I had..Mayhem broke out. His guard attacked his guard, nobles attacked nobles.. I saved his life, and as such he thinks highly of me.

But no other lives were saved, my king. Not loyalists, or traitors. The King of Miring urgently requests our aid, militarily. And I strongly advise you send him help. Without direct military aid, Miring will fall to Preston, and we will border an expansionist state with an army nearly double our size. If we do aid Miring, we will be able to sack Preston and occupy it. Given Miring's dire circumstances, we will likely be able to get away with a very lopsided division of the spoils."

There is an unspecified amount of unsettled land in Eelspine.  Typically, unsettled land has a difficulty of +1 per parcel of land you try to colonise, but Eelspine's barren and rocky nature makes it +2.  Where unsettled land exists, it is open for the claiming.

[4]  As expected, Eelspine is almost entirely uninhabited due to the harsh terrain.  The bad news is that this will make it more difficult to settle.  The good news is that this means there are no bandits or clans able to oppose new colonists.  Your geographers can't have accurate numbers, but they reckon there might be more than twenty parcels' worth of potentially arable land (plateaus and such) across the whole of Northern Eelspine.  The hard part is claiming it.

"Well my lord I believe Gil. will be proof enough." as the last words are spoken the two tailed cat walks infront of Hiatsu, adn as Hiatsu snaps his fingers the cat changes into a eleven foot tall figure draped in a blood red cloak with symbols of an unknown language written all over it, and upon examining him you can see that none of his body show, but the six arms sticking out of holes in the robe, and his blood red eyes.  Hiatsu says "This my Lord is my familiar Gilgamesh wielder of exaclibbur, the Three Forgotten Swords, and nomerous other weapons for he is also known as 'The Master of All Weapons', adn he can use any weapon every made. Is this proof enough, or shall I perhaps summon an Imp, or make a tree grow from the ground?"

Name the town River Fall.  As it is built along the Elbreth river nearby a beautiful waterfall.

Work at River Fall was progressed better than he could hope. The people he met in the town were eager to help with the building that were springing up almost overnight. The promise of a better life for a work of hard toil this one was too much for many peasants to deny. It was clear that they would provide a good tithe to the church in taxes come the harvest.

As work continued, Knavston took it upon himself to return to the Palace of King Erik. No doubt much had transpired over the many months that the army had been away from the Kingdom and the good king would be needed his council. As he travelled down the roads and trails to the palace, he noted the marks of a fire from the dungeons with many workers going to and fro, trying to repair the damage, his thoughts instantly returned to the 'alchemist' the guards had brought before the king the year prior. He hoped that the flames had consumed the fool.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the traitor's brother introduced himself, Knavston drew his sword immediately. Having grown up in the Order, he was trained to be suspicious of almost all those who claimed to hold sway over magic. Let alone those who had the blood of traitors. His eyes focused on Hiatsu with a sharp distrust. The magicians tricks only increased his distrust of him, he kept his sword up and ready.

“It would be wise not to heed his tricks, Your Majesty!” The Grand Master blurted. “He is the brother of a traitor, that alone clouds his heart's intentions. He is dangerous enough on his own, let alone if you give him coin and land. His heart speaks nothing but Pride and revenge.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Terenos' return and news

“The news from Miring is indeed grave. If Preston is indeed planning an attack on Miring, then I would no other choice but then to attack Preston ourselves.” Black pondered the whole situation over quietly. “Hopefully the forces of Miring are not too depleted that they may be of use in turning the tide. We should make it a priority to discover what men they have available to them. Luckily for us, our treasury is all but overflowing and it should not be a hard task to recruit the regiments needed to outnumber the Preston Guard regiments. It might even solve the problem of overpopulation our Kingdom seems to suffer. I would recommend marching as soon as the planting season is done Your Majesty.”

The smoky longhouse was empty except for the 2 scouts, Wroth, Reg and Corv.  His face lightened up at the information that the Taggarts were severly weakened. They fought hard and well indeed, a great addition to his army...

Reg get the Blôdvindrs and send them out they shall raid the Taggarts. But i do not want gold, i want their children and their women. They shall bring me slaves or better said, hostages.

Raid the Taggart lands with my Blôdvindrs with the goal to capture as many children and women as possible as hostages for future "negotiations"

Drua stands tall in front of the king, smiling broadly as she opens her bag and draws out her notes on the forces of Suul from their hiding place. She passes them to the King.

"There were some brief troubles with Suul authorities, but I managed to work them out. The Archbishop mentioned lands across the sea, and from my bounty of alchemical goods and herbs, they are interesting lands indeed. There are three main holy orders in Suul, and I have managed to make a few good contacts and friends in each.  Suul has six infantry regiments and a navy composed of at least nine light ships, but there's no vassal forces, as the Archbishop is quite the absolute ruler. In my discussion with him, I found him a pleasant enough man, but a man who can keep himself in power through either charisma or force. I made some maps that are not my best work, but I was thoroughly distracted by apprentice cartographers that were ordered to accompany me by the Archbishop.  Suul isn't interested in trade at the moment, but that could have possibility to change later. All in all, a very successful diplomatic mission."

Drua smiles and curtsies.

(Actually nope Gilgamesh can't remain in his true form longer than five minutes before he begins draining his master's vitality, so he is basically a double edged sword since if it is used to often he can also lose some of his vitality. As for magic it costs some of the user's own strength to use overstep you limit, adn you die it is as simple as that.))

Kaguro agreed to attempt to work out that situation with the king before going over more detail with the alchemist((mostly just what he needs for the lab and what he's looking for in an assisstant)). He would then leave the barracks, ordering his personal guard to stand watch over the alchemist and head to court, the king had returned.
