How broken are Hunting Dogs?
« on: July 08, 2011, 09:49:51 am »

I have 3 of them, my hunter regularly makes kills - but as far as I can see, the dogs just wander about aimlessly near the hunter. Broken or what?

I think that the hunting dogs need to actually be assigned to the hunter.

They do need to be assigned, in theory, but in practice even when assigned, nothing appears to happen.  They sneak around near the hunter and don't really do anything.

They don't do anything in the most current version.  They stay close to the hunter they're assigned to, but even if the hunter is attacked in melee by an angry animal, the hunting dog just watches.  They're completely useless at the moment.

i think they provide a passive bonus to ambush and/or observation when assigned.

i dont know, i never use hunting dogs, and i dont often assign my war dogs.

I trained one hunting dog back in .18 but it never attacked anything, even when it was attacked by goblins it never fought back. I never trained another hunting dog.

They work perfectly fine to start tantrum spirals. They also sometimes decide to attack animals when your Hunters run out of ammo and cancel the hunt. Hunting Dog vs Elephant is pretty funny.

They sneak around near the hunter and don't really do anything.

One thing they do is getting killed by larger animals and making the hunter really sad.

I am sure i have seen a hunting dog attacking the victim of my hunter at least once, it was a turkey, which had been attacked by the hunter before. latest version.

i modded hunting GCSs for laughs at one point. They were way better than my hunting wolves on one fort, attacking everything that the hunter went after, and on the next fort they ignored everything.

I use war dogs for my hunters, but as the "hunters" are just my militia in food-gathering mode, this is unsurprising.

Psh, dogs. I trained a hunting elephant once. Try to picture a hunter sneaking up on a deer with an elephant following him; somehow it's very dwarven.

"Okay Bruno, now be verra quiet, lest the deer be startled afore I kin shoot it."
<Dwarf creeps cautiously through bushes. Elephant follows..>
THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP.
"Ach, another one heard me coming, got to work on me ambushin' skills."

Of course he starved before the hunter could track down his first victim, so can't report on actual effectiveness.

Hunting dogs work when they are attached to military units I'm pretty sure. From memory, just training them with one of your military dwarves is enough (don't assign them as a pet, no bad thoughts on doggy death). I could have this all mixed up with wardogs though, I usually use a mix.

I'll do some testing, as this may have been from a few versions ago....
