Update delayed due to screencap shenanigans again. NT compat mode did not work as intended.
That stopped working for me. I'm now trying this:

go into AlphaCentauri.Ini and add "DirectDraw=0" beneath [Alpha Centauri]

Already tried, that never worked for me. Or it made it worse? I forget.

Try changing it to 2000's compatibility mode.

Update 3: From Within

The war effort experiences a rather sharp issue. Another assault on Morgan's base ends in victory for the defenders- it's clear we can't effortlessly overpower them any further. Several other units are decimated in failed assaults as well.

The causes of this are revealed somewhat later- it occurs to me that most of our current forces are green troops, whereas Morgan probably has some more hardened defenders. Furthermore, a nearby sensor array helps give him the upper hand.

Fortunately, several things happen in our favor. We manage to research better weapons (4 as opposed to 2), as well as gaining (through trade, I think?) the ability to create seagoing vessels. Now we can mop Morgan off our island as well as spread beyond it.

Unfortunately, then disaster strikes:

Sadly, the situation is even worse than it looks. Our base fell not to aggression but treachery- the credit-fat hog simply purchased our people's loyalty by raping their minds. This lack of resolve will not be tolerated. Ironically, I had renamed it "Immortal" in tribute to its defense against Morgan prior to his own deluded renaming. Furthermore, the base in question had very nearly finished a prototype using our vital new weaponry, a project we'd recycled the equipment of most of our existing armed forces for. Finally, it will be difficult indeed to recapture, due to its natural defenses.

More bad news awaited us over the seas- our colony pod ran into those mad scientists. They were reasonably friendly, but we can hardly build a new base in their territory without angering them, giving us far fewer options. I knew when I saw the forested coasts that this landmass was occupied, but felt we could hardly be held accountable for not knowing that at the time. Now that excuse is gone.

Furthermore, we've acquired a map, and discovered those religious fanatics to be... a bit ahead of us. It's likely the others are similarly well situated- we'd best deal with Morgan and recover swiftly, or we'll be in serious trouble.

Not all is grim, however- our western bases both have rec commons to avoid rioting, and Synergy sports a network node. With our sea capability we might be able to discover unclaimed regions for expansion, and our new war machine has, in limited tests, proven more than equal to Morgan's. Also we savaged all of his terraforming when it became clear that we couldn't beat him openly, so he should still be reeling from being in an unimproved desert.

Looks like this war is still going to drag on for a bit longer than I'd care for. But at least you got a weapons advantage now, and potentially a way to bring it to a close before the other factions get too far ahead. Still going to have a nasty uphill battle.

Update 4: Just A Flesh Wound

The war against Morgan's capitalist pigs, and against our own limitations, experiences several interesting developments.

On the northern side, it occurs to me that there's a patch of non-University territory on the northeastern side. I attempt to load the colony pod into our sole transport to move it there, but Santiago- who's currently seething with rage at me for reasons unknown (but likely relating to good looks)- had a transport and military unit right there. Deciding that having an unguarded base near her forces was more of an invitation than I wanted to give her, I had to revise my plan and send the ship south again.

Unfortunately, she had other plans, and her transport clogged the narrow strait between the two landmasses. I was reluctantly forced to send it south the long way.

The former, meanwhile, explored south and discovered more unclaimed territory, ripe for settlement. They also uncovered some mind worms and were summarily eaten, but I'm sure their families will appreciate the necessity of their valiant sacrifice. The Mad Scientist Continent has room for us after all.

In other news, I may have forgotten to mention that those religious fanatics- the ones considerably further along than us- are at war with us. Mostly because they're too stupid and far away to actually do anything about it. We'll have to deal with them at some point, but for the moment she's harmless. Other political developments include trading technological data with Lal, then buying some more off him for a hundred credits. And I think giving a loan to Santiago, I forget.

As for the war, our former colony fell with shockingly little resistance- a full five regiments was armed to deal with it, but just one was more than sufficient. It seems the people did not abandon their ideals so easily after all.

Afterwards, Morgan contacted me to discuss some things.

Mainly, how he was still onto me and would wipe me off the face of the planet.

He managed to develop or steal the same sorts of weapons we have, and one of his rovers managed to slip past and threaten our bases. It managed to destroy two regiments caught in the open, then fell to the inexperienced but devoted defenders of our most western colony. Retooling the transport it was working on in favor of a unit of infantry, then using credits to rush it through for a counterattack, proved totally unnecessary.

Despite his advanced weaponry, however, his forces were no match for ours. We quickly crushed every other base he had (the newer one was destroyed utterly prior to retaking Immortal). Their capital was left in ruins when we captured it, which is perhaps a fitting analogy. To what I'm not sure, but their headquarters are rubble and we're celebrating, so that's what's really important here.

In other news, the colony pod loaded on a transport managed to find numerous land already occupied, but seems to have hit an unclaimed spot. We should have an oversees outpost soon.

Hooray! Victory!

Now, to catch up with the others during those many tens of years of constant war.

At least two in the Believers and Spartans; Lal doesn't like us a whole lot but isn't an enemy yet. University likes us a lot for some reason, and I'm not sure what the Gaians think.

If we have lots of military hardware left, maybe we could use it against some of ou r new ennemies?

University may like us because of similar ideologies?

Also.. I have this game somewhere, but cannot play due to my quadcore PC with 64-bit Windows 7.
I have no idea why but it keeps crashing.

The Gaians will probably like you, since you're in a war with the Morganites, who are their Arch-Enemies.

That's strange, I can run it, without compatibility, in a dual-core Vista.

You may have to run it in XP compatibility mode or whatever it was called. I'm fuzzy on the subject, but I think Win7 broke some compatibility for performance. Maybe Compatibility mode would fix it.
