By the way, for any actual English people here, what is the big deal about the Metropolitan Police?  I know they're the London police, and I take it in the multicentury evolution of British law, they also have national responsibilities of some kind?  Because they keep coming up in these stories, and the Chief of the MPs is referred to as "UK's Top Police Officer".

Basically, they're like American Marshals. They have jurisdiction all up and down England (and, I believe, limited jurisdiction in Wales and Scotland), as well as their stuff in the London area.

Sometimes I wish we still had a government with some balls. Murdoch's empire should be torn down immediately, to be perfectly frank.

I think maybe Obama needs to do a 'liberal jihad' on this one

Not just for himself but for everyone who isn't Rupert Murdoch

They sort of have controlling interest in the government.

Why would the government WANT to take down an agency that works for them so willingly?

Because it backstabs them every time there is a dollar in it?

On going reportage about News Corporation employees just took a turn for the seriously weird: A former entertainment reporter of News of the World, who left (or was fired from) the company in 2004 and provided key information in the original investigation of Andy Coulson, was found dead in his home today.  By all the sounds of it, he probably keeled over of his own accord, but the police gave no official statement except that he wasn't murdered.  Good to know, but almost laughable if there wasn't a dead guy involved.

By the way, that's the Wall Street Journal there, bought by NewsCorp from it's original family ownership in 2007, which said family now says they regret.  Les Hinton, CEO of the Dow Jones corporation and the paper's publisher resigned a couple days ago.

Well holy ship: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-18/news-corp-said-to-consider-naming-chase-carey-as-ceo-suceeding-murdoch.html
In summary, if the Parliamentary chats don't go well, Murdoch may be replaced as CEO; though he would still have a lot of control over the company due to his family owning about 40% of 'voting stock.' He would likely be replaced by Chase Carey; who by the looks of it has been the top candidate for the position for several months.

Still, it's rumors of a possibility at this point; certainly not set in stone. But certainly in the realm of plausible, as the company has lost over 1/5 of it's value since the start of this, and Murdoch's name being attached to it certainly not helping matters any. He's become too well known for his and the company's own good.

In other news, it would appear this whole scandal was just too juicy: Lulzsec is back, redirecting the webpage for The Sun to a fake story about Murdoch committing suicide.

But wait, there's more! http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/18/mystery-bag-bin-rebekah-brooks
In a not-at-all-suspicious manner, Brooks' husband was found attempting to retrieve a bag from a bin in a parking garage near their home containing a computer, phone, and paperwork. It doesn't seem clear as to what if any connection the materials have to the case (the husband claims they have none, naturally), and police are going through the contents.

Anonymous claims to have a bunch of NewsCorp emails, will be doing a release tomorrow. Depending on whether they are mundane or not, that could potentially lead to more interestings.

Haha, Murdoch got a shaving cream pie in the face from an activist at the Parliamentary testimony.

And judging by the MSNBC article title, if they are indeed considering replacing Mordoch based on how he does at the hearing... it isn't looking good for Murdoch.

The most laugh I got out of an article in a long time. For one because wikileak is being prosecuted , and manning is actually in prison.
And secondly well, faking not to understand the difference between searching the cellphone of a murdered 16 y old girl for extra spice for a trashy article and exposing US foreign policy is simply hilarious.

What about hacking the phones and other communication nodes for politicians? How does that stack up to exposing, with no profit motive, government documents?

You answer it yourself : right to privacy, you're collecting personal informations.

It's not "personal" information any more than what Wikileaks and Manning published. If they can hack phones, they can hack computers and hacking the computers of politicians is not just personal information. It's national security information and politically sensitive information and everything else. I think you're missing two or three distinctions yourself.

I'd be far more concerned about one of the largest corporate empires in the world hacking the phones of politicians under the guise of journalism than a group of people who can't even let themselves be identified because of how hard the gov't would come down on them.

Hmmmm, I'm not sure of what you're saying. Of course that's national security information. And of course, one should not overdo whistleblowing. But you don't even need that : news of the world also collected a ton of personal informations, and not over the pretense of exposing any misdemeanor, just to spice their articles. They've been caught red handed, with no moral shields.
