Learning to draw (not fooling around)
« on: July 07, 2011, 09:02:29 am »

This fall, I'm going to the Art Institute of Seattle to get a BA in Game Design.  One of the things I need to get into the program (but not the school) is a portfolio, specifically one that showcases my understanding of composition, line weight, value/light and dark.  And perspective, form/shape, and light values.  And also form, lighting, and proportions.  I know nothing of these strange concepts, but that's ok, the Institute has their ways to help out drawing inhibited peeps like me :)  But I don't want to wait, so I'm starting this thread to post my attempts at real drawing and to get some feedback.  Will post... something later, after work.

Those are all pretty basic composition elements covered in high school, so I imagine there are plenty of good Youtube video tutorials explaining them. Getting the concepts isn't the hard part, it's putting them into practice right. I suck at perspective.

Same here. My perspective is always off, and sometimes skews what would be an ok drawing.

Man. Sometimes I wish I was 18 again, about to apply to college. I sure wouldn't go down the engineering path again, I can tell you that.

Back when I decided what to study all these "game making" schools and programmes didn't really seem like a serious option. Today, it's a whole different world. A staggering six years later.  ::)

As for hints and tips: just do it. Get some inspirational music going, brew a pot of coffee, sit down and let it happen.

Tutorials and the like can teach a lot, but not until you are looking to solve a specific problem in a current drawing of your own. Thats how I work at least. I regularly watch tutorials just for fun, but it's not until I run in to that same problem and re-watch the tute I really learn something.

Best of luck in your endeavour!
