:D Though the stereotypical Dwarven settlement is built 1 mile below ground and filled with booze, please be aware that digging too far down in DF has a significant chance of unleashing endless waves of cave trolls, bugbats, crundles and, in many cases, venom-spewing clowns. (Booze is still okay.)

:D The aforementioned clowns are present on every map, and there's no way to tell exactly how close to the surface they are. Use discretion when digging.

:D Magma mist used in traps leaves little mess and reduces anything to crispy cinders.

:D Badgers make excellent war animals.

:D Magma, unlike water, isn't normally subject to hydrostatic pressure, so it's far easier and safer to work with so long as you use heatproof materials.

:D Weapon traps don't need training, unlike a militia, and can quickly and safely gib siegers, angry wildlife and peaceful wildlife alike without exposing your dwarves to danger.

:D Dwarves that have been exposed to tragedy are less likely to be disturbed by further tragedy.

 ;D  Good Advice depends on how you read it, I could say that you need to wall of your fortress from invaders or I could also say to let everyone in, just dig a straight line into tunnels of rock, distance helps a lot!

 ;)  Remember, when you are embarking, look for biomes that have a "Terrifying or Haunted" tag. This means that your dwarves will be more terrifying and haunt your enemies!

 :)  In making a farm, always water your farm plots everytime, food needs a lot of water to grow!

 >:(  Do NOT bring any cats, they just kill your nice insects which you will need for background design.

turn off the caverns then its not so far to the magma.
(-->no booze on embark, no silk for moods)

booze is a useless food item. Instead, open up a pond to flush into your fort. the dorfs get a happy thought from this. alternatively, start on a river. building a fort deep underground and then mining into the river provides much needed water for your dwarfs. letting it freely trickle down the stairways to the lower levels ensures your dwarfs don't need to expend too much effort while getting their much needed water. this method also protects them from outside elements (eg spotting an ambush RIGHT NEXT TO YOU)

Enable the stone hauling labor on all of your miners. This way they'll know to carry back some ore before they go on break.

Make sure to keep your Idler count low by any means necessary.

but that IS good advice.  no one has time to socialise, no one makes friends, tantrum-spirals are harder to come by.

the reverse on the other hand....

The nice way of having friendless idlers: give them such nice rooms that they sit in them all day and stare blissfully at their beds.
The not-so-nice way: Make multiple meeting zones all over the place so that dwarves are compelled to shuffle between them.

Even Modest Quarters with a bed, a cabinet, and a door (which I don't think they admire anyway due to the way room boundaries interact with doors) are enough to keep dwarves isolated.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

personally, i'd just tell them this:

Dwarves like making friends, you should give them plenty of time to socialize.

:) Liquids, unlike dwarves, cannot flow diagonally.

:) Seaside embarks provides plenty of seafood and is a good choice for a new player.

:) Volcanoes offer easy access to magma. Embark near one to gain access to nearly unlimited smelting and forging!

Make sure they read the first one before the other two.

:) We joke alot on the forums, don't expect to be able to take alot of what we say too seriously. Indeed, there is alot of humour in the wiki too.
