oh, plaster is easy to make, hatches are useless, and you really don't need to bring any cats.

But... you don't need to bring any cats.

Since military dwarves gain experience per hit, you should give them really shitty weapons.

This one is actually really nice. I would believe it if I were new!

I haven't been playing all that while, maybe a few months, but the worst advice I can think of is the mistake I made that caused lots of interesting Fun too quickly.  "The value of your fortress is really important.  Raise it as fast as you can by smoothing floors and walls to increase the value of rooms." - i.e. more migrants that one can handle too fast and triggering beasties before the military could even be thought of.  Truly the way to teach 'losing is Fun' up front and get it out of the way.  =P

Bad Advice:If possible, make a dwarf with a preference for olm tooth your baron. (did this in one of my forts, made me want to cry when I realized olms don't have teeth.)

Ill Timed Good Advice:Terrifying Taigas are a whole lot more fun than calm Temperate broad-leaf forests. (this may be the first fort I've decided to live dangerously with.I will have to reclaim before the first summer is over due to an invasion of skeletal giant badgers.)

"Skilled dwarves, particularly soldiers, are much more valuable than peasants.  Spend you embark points mostly on their skills, supplies for their tools/weapons/armor, and maybe some animals and spare wood.  Food and drink can be managed later in most sites,"

GREAT advice for a veteran.  Terrible advice for a newbie.  Seven peasants and a crapton of food and drink is way more forgiving.

Your mileage may vary on this one:

Dwarves like being underground. Building your fort completely below the surface is a very natural and good idea.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider putting all my facilities underground. For a newbie, I would recommend the same strategy I use myself - mine rooms underground and use the stone for building a defensive wall around the fort. This should secure a wood supply and a drinking area (assuming you've got potable water on the surface) without too much additional fuss. Both can be very useful for new players.

I am the polar opposite. Unless it's an early abbatoir, everything goes underground with a double airlock and a loophole defensive system.

... No, really, you don't need to take special care to prepare your fort at embark, take what you like where you like...
No, really. You absolutely have to spaz out on the embark screen and you must find the perfect spot and the perfect point distribution for your very first fortress. Else you'll be doomed and you'll fail before summer arrives! REALLY!

And don't forget to give every dwarf exactly the skills that his preferences call for! You must micromanage everything completely right from the very start!

And under no circumstances let the game roll for more than a few seconds without pausing to see whether the situation has changed!

...... I pause all the time.  Shiii

Build your fortress inside a volcano, it's an awesome form of defense.

I suspect it's true, however, I wasn't quick enough and got sieged while everyone burned up in the magma because of a hatch stuck open by an alpaca wool cap.
