When we say clowns we actually mean clowns. Really! There's a circus down there and everything! It's soooooo cool, you should check it out. Sure it's a bit of a dig but the light is really just a reward in itself. Oh! By the way, they love gifts, they're the only creatures who will actually take gifts from your dworfs. Especially adamantine warhammers. Of course it improves happiness so in turn it improves productivity. No we're not going to lie to you, farming, woodcutting and mining are pretty important. So I suggest you send all of your guys down there with ALL of the addy converted into warhammers. Mmmm, theres a bug where they only actually take the one gift and you can't offer another so you better be ready. Anyway, all the effort is worth it, cause the game sets the circus as a new meeting hall, so you should leave a very clear path to the circus. Also! Before I forget, the circus chews through a bit of your FPS so you might want to avoid the traps and defences facing the caverns. Don't stress though. Those clowns are BRILLIANT fighters, you'll see. I promise it.

Remember to bring along plenty of tin flutes and other musical instruments, so you can pacify the cave swallows.  Bring along a large selection from across the many different types in all the different materials your civilisation provides so that you can try to get the right set of notes and tones to handle most cave creatures.

If you need to, you can safely leave picks, anvils and axes out of your initial wagon, because dwarfs don't really need them any more than they need fishing rods or chisels to get fish or create rock furniture/crafts, and they just take up space and embark points.

The military requires pets to comfort them. And barrels and bins are interchangeable. Goblin prisoners are valued by human traders, who can sell you bigger armors. Against forgotten beasts traps are the safest defense.

Furnace operating requires lignite/coal blocks, but the traded gear comes with more <<quality>>. The civilians are best protected by making adamantine into clothes.

Military requires medics and having medical professionals in squads guarantees that they'll be in the right place at the right time. Get enough waterskins to all your soldiers and have them sleep in the barracks so they can train properly around the year. If someone gets miserable you should station him to the most popular place among the dwarves until he gets better.

Calm outdoor jobs like fishing and herbalism are most suitable for mothers of small children.

Stone-fall traps are the best traps to use because you only need stone to make them.

From the moment you reveal adamantine, a timer is started which will unleash demons after 20 minutes unless you can bring every last piece of that adamantine to the surface.

It's bad advice for a noob. It's good advice for someone who knows how to play a bit. Aquifers are awesome, but I wouldn't have been able to figure them out on a first run.

you should bring as much trifle pewter/brass/rose gold/... with you on your embark as you can, drop the picks and anvils for this, you'll need it to satisfy your noble demands, it's really important you always satisfy your noble demands.

The easiest way to remove a tree on the surface is to designate an Upward Ramp beneath it.
